Excellent history covering the 19th Century through to the present of the peoples of the Caucasus Mountains. The author has done thorough research of the 19th Century and World War experiences of this fascinating region by studying the few and often biased traveler accounts from those periods. And, the author has traveled through the region in recent decades and was on the scene during some of the important recent events. The main groups covered are the Circassians, Balkars, Chechens, and Dagestanis, plus of course Russians who have been mainly working to stamp out the other groups. The author brings the history to life through extensive interviews with people from the region, some of whom are in exile communities outside of the Caucasus.

In the afternoon of April 15, 2013, I was listening to the radio. An announcer interrupted the broadcast to report that there had been a blast at the Boston Marathon. He was careful not to attribute the bombing to any one group - because we are all afraid of appearing to stereotype one group as terrorists. Indeed, he insisted, the Boston blast might have been caused by a ruptured gas pipe. After Chechen refugees Dzhokhar and Tamerlan Tsarnaev were identified as the Boston Marathon bombers, one of my students said to me, "See? Everyone thought it was Muslim terrorists. But now it turns out it was Russians!"My student should read Oliver Bullough's "Let Our Fame Be Great: Journeys Among the Defiant People of the Caucasus." So should many people."Let Our Fame Be Great" is a heartbreaking, informative, recommended book. I was often in tears while reading it. I'm very glad I learned what Bullough had to teach. LOFBG is a travelogue through the history, literature, and current events of the Caucasus. This little-known corner of the world should be better known.I have Circassian and Armenian friends. I've been to Romania, Bulgaria, and Turkey, three countries bordering the Black Sea. I remember reading about the Russian destruction of Grozny, the capital of Chechnya, in the New York Times. Even so, I knew virtually nothing about the material Bullough introduces in his book.The Caucasus is a spit of land between the Black and the Caspian Seas, between Russia to the north and Turkey and Iran to the south. When Turkey was Europe's "sick man" and its power was declining, Russia moved south to fill the vacuum. Russia wanted access to the Black Sea, because its own ports freeze over in winter. Through brute force, Russia attempted to control or even eliminate the scattered Muslim ethnic groups living in the Caucasus. Russia did this as a czarist empire, as the Soviet Union, and as post-Soviet Russia.Bullough depicts the Russians in the Caucasus behaving, more or less, as American settlers behaved toward the Native Americans. We want your land, and we will do what we have to do to you to get your land.Another comparison: historian Anne Applebaum compared what the Russians did to the Caucasus to what the Nazis did to Poland.Bullough divides his book up into chapters devoted to various Caucasus ethnic groups: Circassians, Mountain Turks, and Chechens. For each group, he works through literature going back hundreds of years, historical accounts, travelogues, state documents, and contemporary accounts. This is a massive amount of material, reduced to brief excerpts.With the Circassians, for example, Bullough quotes literature written by Russian authors like Ivan Turgenev, travel accounts by British representatives toying with the idea of aiding the Circassians against the Russians, quotes from Russian military leaders attacking the Circassians, and encounters with modern-day Circassians living in diaspora in Israel.Bullough has a gift for selecting particularly heart-rending quotes, and he uses many of these quotes as chapter titles: "The Caucasus Mountains are sacred to me," "Extermination along would keep them quiet," "The Circassians do not appear on this list," "Liquidate the bandit group," "It was all for nothing," and "I have become no one."One anecdote Bullough recounts tells of one Caucasus woman, Khozemat Khabilayeva, who, as a child, was part of a Soviet-ordered mass deportation of her homeland. Her dog, Khola, tried to save her family, and he met with a sad fate that Khabilayeva, an old woman now, wept over, decades after his death. There are many such stories in this book, the individual droplets that add up to an ocean wave of history.Because I was so unfamiliar with this history, I did question if Bullough was too sympathetic to the Caucasus peoples, and too hard on the Russians. Bullough, though, includes actual quotes by Russian leaders voicing genocidal intent toward Caucasus people. He cites one Russian leader who decorated his home with the decapitated heads of Circassians.Too, Bullough does report on unappealing aspects of Caucasus culture. Circassians, for example, had the custom of selling their own children into slavery. So many Circassian daughters were sold into sex slavery that the reputation of the beautiful Circassian spread all the way to PT Barnum's sideshow. Bullough describes the 2004 Belsan hostage crisis as a complete horror.I compared what I know of Russian behavior to my own ethnic group, Poles. In Poland, czarist Russia and Soviet Russia deported massive numbers of people, redrew maps, criminalized the identity of oppressed people, executed large numbers of people in order to terrorize populations. Russia, it seems, did to the Caucasus what it did to the Poles. Bullough's account is all too believable.Russia plans to hold the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, one site of its genocide against the Circassians. A Caucasus terrorist leader, Doku Umarov, issued a threat against these games. Terrorism is wrong. The Sochi games should be protested, in peaceful, educational, and solidarity-building ways.Bullough includes photos of the bones of Circassian refugees found lying in the dirt in Akchakale, Turkey. Circassian activists should take these bones from Turkey, by boat across the Black Sea, retracing the route their ancestors took, and bury them in Sochi, with the stated goal of building a genocide monument in Sochi. They should film the entire trip. No doubt the Russians would attempt to stop them. Their peaceful protest would educate the world about their history.I wonder, after reading LOFBG, why no one seems to care about Russia's human rights abuses against Caucasus Muslims. Bullough writes of Khasan Bibulatov, a Chechen man who was horribly tortured by Russians. Zarema Muzhakhoyeva is one of the most pathetic human beings I've ever read about - her life story is right out of an over-the-top Dickens orphanage. She gave up her suicide bomb mission, cooperated with the Russian police, and was still jailed for twenty years. I wonder if so little attention is paid to victims of Russian oppression in the Caucasus because Russia committed many of these crimes as a communist government, and leftists don't want to remind the world that communists were the last century's most prolific murderers.

Makes you realise that current Russian behaviour in annexing areas of the world which have their own independent views and societies is nothing new in Russian history. How tragic that these cultures are almost lost to the mainstream world but I take my hat off to the people who try to maintaint heir culture in exile.

Engrossing and tragic, this book puts a whole new perspective on the struggles of the Muslims in Chechnya and other mountain regions that battle Russia. Terrorism and involving civilians is never acceptable, but neither is the actions of larger countries, as the author does a very good job of pointing out in this fascinating book which combines current events and history flawlessly.

This History of the Caucuses has been very well written and researched. Oliver Bullough gives a great picture of Chechnya especially during the 1990's with war against Russia. But Bullough also delves into the history of the entire region in a most readable and delightful manner. He does a very good job of explaining the many different peoples, cultures and religions. He also talks about the Diaspora and the many groups and their forced migrations under the Czars, the Soviet Union and Russia. These people are not easy to understand as knowledge of each group, religion, culture and language will go a long way to a better understanding. Bullough goes a long way of solving this mystery. It makes me glad that I found this book and was able to read because here is many groups of people that we are called after (Caucasian) and we in the West have no idea what they are like and how little in common we have with them. I recommend this book to anyone who is serious about History.

This is one of those Amazon books that someone writes in a week and hopes to cash in on. The “book” is written in large print, is very superficial and lacks any meaningful detail. You will not be any smarter or ready to trade options after you read this book. The description of the book says it has “strategies and tactics for investing in stock, binary, furtures, and ETF options”. I cannot identify any strategies or tactics in this book. It contains statements like “when options are overvalued, they happen to be above the theoretical price”. And, under “Common mistakes to avoid” reads “One of the most difficult ways of making money is to trade out of the money call options”. That’s it, that’s the mistake to avoid. It may as well say “don’t buy high and sell low”. The book is full of vernacular, circular statements, incomplete concepts and statements of the obvious. Don’t waste your time or money on this book. You will get more complete and relevant information for free on the internet.

The book is easily understandable from a reading perspective, however, the author could have gone a step further to add some stock charts and/or options trading grids to give the reader of clear visual of many of the things he describes. There a several instances near the end of the book where the author is discussing specific option trading strategies which without a visual or possibly how you would select and options trade position on a trading platform, describing the strategy does very little for the reader but familiarize them with related terminology.I've been studying the basics of options trading just for two months now and knew most of what was already mentioned in the book. If you know absolutely nothing, and I do mean NOTHING, this book my be a good way to start learning about options trading. However, I would suggest that you could learn just as much on the web and even more by watching YouTube vids on the subject. There are many Videos on this subject that go into the same, and even deeper details, that have great visuals that coincide with how to trade these options. I'm giving the overall rating three stars since the reader, who would be totally new to options, needs to have clear visuals on trading strategies when they would be looking at them on a trading platform.

I spend about $4000 on a 3 day course in Stock Trading a while back.Got some of the basic ideas, but was not confident enough to jump in and trade as a day-trader.Now, I am revisiting the trading scene again and came across this book.I like the author's honesty and the practical, no BS approach that he has projected in this book.The important points that differentiate the author's approach are:Using a sophisticated scanner to identify stocks to work with.Emphasis on perfecting a rigorous routine for day-trading.In my opinion, this book provides a better insight into the world of day-trading than an expensive course, except for the hands-on exercises.**Highly recommended**

While it does not walk you through all of the strategies, you should become familiar enough with the major concepts and principles to know what to ask of a professional; when getting started. This should be enough to do some paper trading and back testing what you have learned.

I will recommend for all my friends who want to start trading. It's very interesting and easy to read.

Intended for first or second year engineering or science students. It teaches programming at an introductory level. Yes, its a text book for one of those Programming 101 courses.However, what sets this textbook apart from others is that it employs two languages (i.e. Fortran and C++), instead of one, to teach the same old material. And this has some interesting charasteristics. The authors has presented the material in a comparative way so that the student has the chance to see, very clearly, the relative merits of each language. For example, when they introduce arrays you will see the ease of Fortran in dealing with them. On the other hand, when object oriented programming is presented, C++'s superiority becomes apparent for that purpose. By seeing two languages side by side, one can also discern the fundamentals from language specific rules.I'm familiar with Fortran and it has been a while since I took my first course in programming but this textbook has taught me quite a lot of things. If you know one of the languages, it might still make sense to buy it. You will appreciate your language better and will find what the other language does better. By the way, the book doesn't teach about mixed language programming.

In addition to being a chemist myself who uses programming technologies extensively, I also teach courses designed to introduce relevant software technologies to other chemists, such as programming and database skills.One of the problems that I faced was lack of a good introductory text on programming that would be relevant to an applied scientist. Most introductory programming books appear to be written for someone who intends to be a computer scientist, or even worse, rather than teaching language-independent skills, they try instead to teach you one programming language. As anyone knows who has ever browsed the computer section of their local bookstore or even here on Amazon, the number of books available on the topic of programming is enormous, to say the least.I was pleasantly surprised when I came across this book at a local electronics store. For the time being, I am going to refer to it as a good starting point for any scientist who wishes to enhance his/her programming skills.Barlow and Barnett cover many of the topics that I consider essential when learning any programming language, such as data types, operators, conditional statements, looping constructs, etc. Furthermore, he even covers important concepts like accessing memory (e.g. pointers in C++), state machines, abstraction, and object-oriented techniques. I was very happy to see the authors stress the importance of striving for ANSI compliant code.For a book that was published in 1998, I was very impressed to see a section on template programming with C++. Clearly, Barlow and Barnett are very good at recognizing emerging trends. Furthermore, they are equally adept at explaining difficult concepts in a lucid way. Towards the end of the book, the authors' physics slant is evident by the section on numerical analysis, but the treatment is great, since it exemplifies how programming can be used for solving computationally intensive tasks that have physical significance.Although this book on programming is geared towards scientists, it really would serve as a nice introduction to programming for any discipline. Although Fortran's popularity is very low outside of engineering, the juxtaposition of C++ with Fortran was a very nice touch, as it really allows one to look past language specific features in order to see generic programming concepts. Computer languages, like spoken languages, are such that, the first one is hardest to learn, but with each one you learn, the process of learning the next one becomes successively easier, and authors' use of two languages in one book really exemplifies this concept.This book does not aim to teach you either C++ or Fortran, although it does point out some real pitfalls (e.g. in C++, x = a[i] + i++) in each language. Instead, the authors gives you a great foundation, from which you will be able learn generic programming concepts, as well as evaluate programming languages, so that in the future, you should be able to select one that is appropriate for your task at hand. Finally, they authors give great examples of using programming technologies to solve problems of a scientific nature, and he is able to accomplish in less than 300 pages what most books fail to do in three to four times that amount.

This book has the same great attention to detail, insider knowlege and personable voice found in the original work. An enjoyble read for SF fans, film geeks, and design nerds alike. Interviews, great stills from the films being discussed, and wide-ranging examples make this a delight to read through, or to enjoy in small sittings.My only quibble is with the publishing. I bought (and returned) this book twice before I got an uncompromised binding. One had a wrinkle across the entire cover, one had the interior pages separating from the cover before I even opened the book. This, however, is not a knock on the quality of work contained within. I just wish the physical object could live up to the contents. Returns were painless, blah de blah blah.Regardless, a great read for anyone interested in the intersection of film, speculative fiction, and design

This book is amazing! Ideal for sci-fi, design and typography nerds. It’s not only informative with a an incredible mind-boggingly level of research behind it, it’s also simply a beautiful piece of design in itself. It’s rare that you find a coffee-table book that you can’t put down, but this is on of those rare gems. I hope the author will make more of these in the future!

The book is beautifully designed, utterly fascinating, and a perfect gift for anyone obsessed with fonts, movies, or both.I got the Kindle version but then immediately ordered the hardcover because that’s the way this book deserves to be consumed - in print.

You know that feeling when a product comes out and it's as if it was made just for you? That was my reaction when this book was released. I was already a fan of the author's blog but this sort of deep-dive analysis is right up my alley! Seven films are featured and if you ever wanted to know about the USS Enterprise's hull markings, or Dr. Floyd's floating pen in 2001, or the history of the ubiquitous Eurostile typeface, it's all here!

This book is a perfect in-depth look at the type, design, and aesthetic set by and used in successive seminal science-fiction movies. I'm flabbergasted by how well written and designed the book is, and with such good humor and attention to detail it dives into picayune details that a designer like me loves.

Most movie-goers probably don't realise how realistic the future looks in sci-fi productions. Set designers and art directors create a very plausible feel and look for the years to come with buildings, props, fashion, lighting and of course type, whether it's those huge numbers on the outside of the USS Enterprise in 'Star Trek' or the text on a tablet's screen in 'Moon' Dave Addey explores this rather niche corner of sci-fi in his surprisingly interesting book.The all-time fave futures type is Eurostyle Bold Extended designed in 1962 by Aldo Novarese for the Italian Nebiolo type foundry and even though it's over fifty years old it still looks the part and can still be used to project a future feel. This was the typeface that Addey kept coming across in movies and inspired him to find out more and eventually write this book. Seven films are looked at in detail: 2001; Alien; Star Trek: The motion picture; Blade Runner; Total Recall; Wall-E; Moon. The typefaces in all of these are explored with plenty of stills and text revealing how they are used right down to the smallest bit of copy, for example, page thirty-six has a still from 2001 showing Doctor Floyd reading the long instructions on how to use a zero-gravity toilet and it's printed out on the opposite page so you can read them. The long running Star Trek used several faces that were issued as a font pack in 1992 (still available online, too). Total Recall, on page 170, has a logo for Mars Today based on the USA Today newspaper.As well as the movies there are heavily illustrated Q and A interviews with two typographers Stephen Coles and Antonio Cavedoni, director Paul Verhoeven, animators Ralph Eggleston and Craig Foster and designer Mike Okuda. The last few pages have fascinating visual summary of how hard it is to create a credible future look that's also good entertainment.Dave Addey writes in a pleasant, breezy style that makes the title a fun read and the rather flamboyant layout of the pages adds to the book's appeal. It will interest graphic designers and especially sci-fi movie fans.

It is advertised for Science Fiction flicks, but really there is much more to the various examples of typography -- futurism at its most beautiful and interesting.Beautifully printed and bound -- a coffee table book that is sure to attract many viewers and inspire interesting conversations -- it certainly has at my house.Robert C.
