Please by Barron's instead.1) This book DOES NOT cover everything you need to know. For example, you should know Graham's Law of Effusion (that showed up on like every single practice test I took as well as the real test), which this book doesn't cover.2) The practice tests (minus the last one) were WAY TOO EASY. The actual test was like 10x harder. I finished the practice tests with like 15-20 min to spare but on the actual test I basically ran out of time3) Barron's does over prepare you, but you can tell what info you need and you don't need to know on Barron's. Tbh, you should probably know everything on Princeton and then some, so I think purchasing both will be a good idea.Some other things you should know if you're planning on taking SAT Chemistry with just this book:How to read a manometerHow to find the molar mass of a gasHow to predict products with only reactants givenHow to detect the presence of different gases/solids - i.e., the splint test for oxygenColors of the transition metals in solution(There's probably more that you need to know, but these are the only ones I can think of off of the top of my head)

PROS:1. The section by section explanations are clear and well done.2. Besides a small caveat (mentioned below) I think that the practice tests are probably the best/ most on-the-ball in terms of what's actually on the SAT II chemistry test itself.CONS:1. Only has three full-length practice tests (compared to say, the Barron's, which has four, and is of similar quality)2. Sometimes veers heavily into trivia (a whole section of the practice test was on biology stuff like nucleic acids, proteins etc which is very rare for the actual test itself... what is the third most abundant gas in the atmosphere when I can see them *maybe* asking the first or second on the actual SAT II)3. This is minor, but if you go through the whole book, the explanations will start to get irritating as the number of times they say "divide and conquer" to explain the true/false/correct explanation thing will get tiresomeIn terms of the SAT II Chemistry options out there:a) Kaplan is WAY too easy in terms of the test bank/practice tests and, in my opinion, good for foundations review and/or confidence boostingb) the Official College Board one is, of course, great, but only gives you ONE practice test for Chemistry and really no subject reviewc) It's a toss up between Princeton and Barron's in terms of which is the best. I feel like the Barron's has questions that are almost a little too hard (or emphasize memorizing things that aren't as commonly tested, like heat of fusion constants that aren't provided), but Barron's gives you four practice tests whereas Princeton gives you three. They both have diagnostic tests and decent topic by topic review... so it comes down to whether you'd rather have one extra practice test (Barron's) or are used to the Princeton method (if you've bought other ones).** You can find additional review questions online for free via sparknotes, but they have some errors, and there are also like 20 free questions provided by College Board online...

Really good textbook. All the topics on the actual test are well explained. The book is very organized and easy to understand. However, there are not many practice tests in this textbook, so I would recommend buying this alongside Barron's books as well, as they provide many practice tests in their textbooks. Nonetheless, Barron's is definitely the textbook I would recommend to you if you are looking to prepare for the SAT Chemistry Test. I have yet to get my test results back, but I can assure you that this textbook helped me to feel more confident and prepared for the actual test.

This was such a helpful tool in learning all of the material that I needed to learn. I took a preliminary test before studying anything and scored a 540. After I went through this book and studied all of the material I took the actual test I scored a 740. Not a perfect score I know but I was learning all the content that my high school course left out- which was a lot. Very pleased, would recommend. Practice tests seemed to represent the actual test very well.

This book really annoyed me. The explanations in it are well organized and very comprehensive and that's great. But it lacks some of the material. As an international student who had to make up for some holes because our education systems teach different things in biology, I relied on this book, only to later find out I missed some vital concepts that weren't in it. I got a 740, but part of it was because of my previous knowledge. Bottom line: you can do well enough with this book; I definitely find the Barron's more boring and harder to read; but if you want to be as ready as you can for the test, either ditch this one or combine it with learning from the Barron's.

Book represents the actual test very well. Taught me the right things and asked the questions in the right way.I bought Barron’s too and it had some of the same information but lacked focus or depth in the right spots.

A Solid review book. I used it to plan my honors chemistry class to correspond with the SAT Chemistry exam. It has a solid reputation which is why I used as a reference for the SAT: Chem curriculum. Easy to follow, well-organized and easy to understand. Solid.

I used this book in combination with Barron’s Chemistry. The two books complement each other very well. Sometimes Barron’s gives “whats” and the Princeton gives “whys” , and vice versa. If both books are conscientiously covered and integrated , you will have a very strong framework bound for high 700s-800 on the actual exam.

About the Author

Ling Ma was born in Sanming, China, and grew up in Utah, Nebraska, and Kansas. She attended the University of Chicago and received an MFA from Cornell University. Prior to graduate school she worked as a journalist and an editor. Her writing has appeared in Granta, VICE, Playboy, Chicago Reader, Ninth Letter, and other publications. A chapter of Severance received the 2015 Graywolf SLS Prize. She lives in Chicago.

Found this book through a review in Rolling Stone and they made it sound like it was the best book of the year.This book was a decent, quick read, however - it was over way before I wanted it to be. I was turning the last page thinking thee was more - there had to be more. Instead I was left wondering what I just read and what the point of it was. Also, the authors writing style and punctuation was a bit hard to follow. I’m no English Major but the conversational formatting in this book would have gotten me a failing grade in 8th grade English class.Maybe someone smarter than figured out the ‘layered meanings’ that this book promised, because i’m left feeling like I walked out in the middle of a movie.

I bought Severance after looking at some of the reviews. The buzz looked good and I am always interested in exploring new twists on the zombie genre. I was thinking Ling Ma’s book might be something along the lines of The Girl with All the Gifts.I was wrong.There is a good novella somewhere in the book. Ma has a good touch for atmosphere and dialogue. She is a perceptive writer. The idea behind Shen Fever was really interesting as was the cult-like survival group Candace found herself in.But so much of Severance seems like filler. The details of the main character’s relationship with her family were interesting and might have made a very good coming-of-age immigrant story. I kept thinking Severance was a mash up like Pride and Prejudice and Zombie, except this was a little like Joy Luck Club and Zombies.Once I started reading about shopping for knock off handbags in Hong Kong around page 100, my mind started rebelling. There is just so much unnecessary detail.Such a shame.

I feel pretty “meh” about this novel. It’s not that it’s bad or uninteresting, it just maybe wasn’t for me. As the blurb says, it IS dark and a little satirical, but even not typically being a reader of this kind of novel, it felt like a pretty standard post-apocalyptic dystopian novel. Character-wise, I didn’t feel like I really got to know any of the characters very well, even Candace, the main character from whose perspective we read the story. Everyone felt a little like a trope and so I couldn’t really bring myself to care about any of them. This novel reminds me of those teen horror movies from the late 90s in the darkness of the humor and the themes.Style-wise, I wasn’t a fan of the lack of quotation marks to denote speech. Maybe I’m traditional but it would have been helpful in differentiating Candace’s internal and external dialogues. And perhaps, or not perhaps, it is likely that this style was implemented intentionally, maybe as some way of further confusing Candace’s perception and reality, and emphasizing the dreamscape nature of this book- given the manifestation that Shen Fever takes and the main character’s tendency to fall into a trance-like state in the face of routine. Whatever the case, I wasn’t a fan of that style.As a lover of romance, I was interested in Candace and Jonathan’s “love story” such as it was. The “love scenes” if you can call them that are THE LEAST sexy scenes you will EVER read and that adds to the dark humor of the entire novel. I mean: “ he handled me as if separating egg whites from yolk,” just tells you all you need to know about the strangeness and awkwardness.Overall, I think this book was neither amazing nor was it terrible. I didn’t especially enjoy it, but I don’t regret reading it either. It felt like a story that had been told before and for someone who isn’t into this genre, I’m still unconvinced. I think this would be a good addition for someone with a post-dystopian fiction collection.

What would it be like if you were one of the few people left on earth after a world-wide epidemic? Hollywood wants to show you with images; Ling Ma takes you inside the head of a very believable protagonist instead, and it makes for a more lasting impact. Ma portrays convincingly the time lag between the beginning of the end and the realization that the world as we know it is irrevocably broken and gone, and the complications of figuring out what to do, where to go and who to trust. One of the best novels I’ve read in the past ten years, and I read a lot.

I love how balanced the recipes are, you don’t feel like you’re cooking “healthy “ recipes . Going to buy it for friends that are a little nervous about cooking seafood because all of the recipes are very approachable

Great recipes and guide for pescatarian lifestyle.

 For those of you who don’t already know “Pescatarian” is a type of Vegetarian. So quite a number of the recipes in this cookbook are geared for straight “veg, dairy, and grains” vegetarians. The Vegetarian Mains chapter features 13 such recipes while a few of the Breakfast chapter recipes are as well.On the celebrity side of things, Wendie Malick, who was born in 1950 and looks TERRIFIC in her late 60s, is a Pescatarian. So, there must be something to this healthy living lifestyle.This cookbook covers lacto-ovo-pescatarian recipes, meaning that they are vegetarian, some are vegan or easily adaptable, but some also include EGGS and DAIRY along with the Fish/Seafood component.Hallissey devotes the first Chapter to defining and outlining what a Pescatarian Diet, Pescatarian Lifestyle is. Not a DIET diet, but diet, as in the eating structure, like for any other kind of Vegetarian.I knew what Pescatarians were, so when I was offered a copy free by the publisher for an honest review, I was expecting a cookbook of mostly Fish centered recipes. That’s not exactly what Hallissey delivered. It is more truly a Pescatarian (as the title indicates, duh, yeah, April) cookbook. Secondarily, it’s supposed to be a healthy cookbook. But it also has quite a bit of content more geared for a Diet Cookbook. I would suggest that The Truly Healthy Pescatarian Diet Cookbook would be more accurate and truthful for what is delivered.I was seriously interested in the title of Chapter 3: Finding and Maintaining Your Naturally Healthy Weight. I hunkered down on my couch, having put the book and review completion aside until I had the time to devote to a thorough reading of the enticingly titled chapter. Only upon reading did I discover it was just another rehashing of BMI and BMRs to determine desired weight. Secondarily, in her admonishing her readers and dietary clients to drink water, she only cited that doing so “helps you to feel full.” When, in actuality, as a DIET tool, our bodies require additional water to break down and metabolize stored fat. I just felt the BMI discussion was a bit well-worn as a topic well-discussed for over 20 years and didn’t warrant a chapter on it.Instead, a much longer and deeper discussion and overview of more fish choices would have been my preference. She does talk about a variety of fish, I just would have liked it to have been even more extensive and less about BMIs. I appreciated her citing a free downloadable PDF on sustainability guide for selecting fish and shellfish. But what about a discussion and education on how wild caught salmon, salmon being well featured through her cookbook, is so much better for women to avoid toxicities and guard against breast cancer?I loved her second chapter on the Pescatarian Kitchen and stocking it for flavor and food pairings for it. Take the time to go through preparing your kitchen for this and contemplating where and how to stock a variety of fish and seafood into your home. This may mean shopping more frequently so your fish is super fresh. Wild caught salmon is ok to freeze. But not all seafood freezes and reheats well. It can get rubbery.In order to keep the printing costs down and the price of the book affordable, this is another cookbook from the publisher without a lot of photos. It’s just because we are so used to images galore with FB, Twitter, and IG that we expect it. However, there have been plenty of phenomenal cookbooks like the Joy of Cooking and Fannie Farmer which don’t have photos and we’ve all done fine without them for years.Something we can all be appreciative of from a non-test kitchen sort of a publishing house is that with each of the recipes they cite the nutritional information, so we can all be aware of those details like fat and sodium and manage those as needed with individual health issues.I have to say the recipes I am most interested in attempting soon are all of the salmon dishes. I really appreciated how there are several salmon recipes throughout and the variety of them. I’m particularly interested in attempting the Salmon cakes with Old Bay seasoning. I’ve never heard of Old Bay seasoning, but there are recipes for it readily findable online. Just be careful of the sodium count because one of the key ingredients is celery salt.I was surprised to find a chapter on Desserts and almost skipped reading it until I read “Chocolate Hummus” and discovered that they all had a NUTRIONAL component to them like avocado or chickpeas! I am seriously interested in attempting Chocolate Hummus! We LOVE chickpeas, and prefer them pureed with something DONE to them for flavor.Introduction viiiChapter 1: The Truly Healthy Pescatarian DietChapter 2: Your Pescatarian KitchenChapter 3: Finding and Maintaining Your Naturally Healthy WeightI found it a fetching title where I hadChapter 4: Breakfasts (who knew?)OK, I could put on weight happily eating the Smoked Trout (or salmon!) and Capers Cream Cheese. But the Loaded Avocado Sweet Potato “Toast” is quite intriguing. Avocados can be unpredictable for precisely WHEN they will be ripe, but this recipe appeals to me, plus I think I can play with it to make some substitutions. The Baked Egg and Smoked Salmon Stuffed Avocado also looks great. She includes a little spice recipe for Everything-Bagel Seasoning. I LOVE Everything-Bagel, but the true bagel is purely white flour, empty carbs. Still nummy, but only sometimes. So I like how she weaves in the salty, savory, toasted seedy flavor combination I love into a low carb breakfast option. I can see I’ll be playing with this recipe, as well.Chapter 5: Soups and SaladsI like the idea of a Salmon based Cobb salad and will play with this to make it my own. The Roasted Tomato soup to my mind, and I’ve seen videos of ladies making this, too, is just a whole lottah work for… Tomato Soup. The Southwestern Butternut Squash Soup appeals to me because I do like Squash (think pumpkin’s cousins) dishes. I’d omit the chips and lean more on the quinoa for a more nutritious carb.Chapter 6: Vegetarian MainsA number of Asian inspired dishes like Tempeh Stir-Fry, Coconut Curry, and Veggie Pad Thai with Tofu and Zucchini. I don’t LOVE coconut curry so much, but Chickpeas and Sweet Potatoes in a curry dish, I could adjust this and make it fit our table. The Zucchini Lasagna is already extremely close to my Eggplant Parmesan, so I don’t know that I would really bother with what is a very slight variation. Still, the premise of the Veg-Not-Carb-Noodles mindset thinking is solid, to think to substitute eggplant thin slabs for NOODLES could inspire me more later.Her Zucchini Linguine and White Clam Sauce is very similar to my Linguine and Clam Sauce dish. So, a little substitution that still results deliciously, omit the alcohol, and it’s still great. The parsley? Flat Leaf Italian to be specific. The curly leaf French stuff tastes bitter. And the clams? We use canned (tinned for you Brits) clams, but they MUST be In Their Own Juices without any of the chemicals which ruins the flavor. Toss the juices into the saucepan. I’ve been wondering about Zoodling this recipe of mine, but hadn’t yet. Reading Nicole’s recipe gave me the necessary nudge to attempt this actually likely quite soon because I have some fresh parsley in the house, and it only lasts a few days.Chapter 8: Snacks and SidesShe has me as Spiced Crispy Cauliflower. I LOVE cauliflower Roasted Carrots, hmm, will need to sub something for the granola because it’s just not my thing. Butternut Mac and Cheese! All the comfort without the sleep-inducing carbs!Chapter 9: DessertsTrust me, check these out! She sneaks FOOD ergo nutrients into her desserts! I’m highly intrigued!Again, all the recipes come with Nutritional Information, so you can manage your own family’s needs and requirements, which is great and reassuring. No surprises about sodium or other item which can be a huge health issue for some.I include the video just to give you a sample of its layout and how much great stuff is included in the Pescatarian Kitchen chapter.HIGHLY recommend this cookbook! Yummy and super healthy for you and your family!

In The Truly Healthy Pescatarian Cookbook, nutritionist Nicole Hallissey discusses the basics of the pescatarian diet, what kitchen tools you need as well as how to find your optimum weight and how to lose to get there.Many of the recipes are different than you find in typical vegan or vegetarian cookbooks. Several of the breakfast recipes, the egg muffins, for instance, are definitely worth trying. While the Chickpea and Sweet Potato Curry sounds intriguing, I already have one that I cook that incorporates greens and is more savory and spicier than the one included here.Perhaps that is my issue with many of the recipes in The Truly Healthy Pescatarian Cookbook. The incorporation of sweet vegetables and fruits tend to make the savory dishes sweeter. If you have a sweet tooth, you’ll probably be drawn to these recipes, but I prefer sweet potatoes, butternut squash, and other sweet vegetables as a side rather than in the main. Even introducing corn and carrots can make a dish sweeten up.Before I became vegetarian, I hated mushrooms, but now they are a go-to for their meaty flavor, and yet, not a single vegetarian recipe here includes them. However, if you love zucchini, sweet potatoes, avocado, salmon, and arugula, you’re in luck. Also, if you’re a fan of greens, you’re out-of-luck.This is a minor gripe, that was hopefully dealt with in the final edition, but among the ingredients for the Chickpea and Sweet Potato Curry is coconut cream without a footnote as to whether she really means coconut cream or milk and hopefully not creme de coconut, which is an ingredient in pina coladas.The seafood and fish recipes are different enough that if you’re considering becoming pescatarian you might enjoy this cookbook. However, as mentioned above, many of the fish recipes also include sweet elements: the paella has sweet plantains, honey mustard dipping sauce for the fish sticks, pineapple in the fried rice, just to mention a few.If you’re considering making the switch to a meatless diet, incorporating more fish into your diet and don’t mind sweetened dishes, you might like The Truly Healthy Pescatarian Cookbook. This would definitely make a good introduction to the pescatarian lifestyle. If you’re already pescatarian or vegetarian, you probably want a more involved cookbook with more diversity in the recipes.I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I've always been intimidated to cook fish and sea food but these recipes are so easy to follow and quick to make. I especially love the steamed clams because they're cooked in under 10 minutes and look so fancy! I make them every time I have guests over. Oh! It's a pescatarian cook book but don't forget about desserts [uh hm...cake pops*]!!!

I've been researching ways to cut down my intake of meat. I love fish but sometimes don't know what to do with it! This cookbook is a great way to start thinking in a healthier way about plant based meals and including fish as a great source of lots of vitamins and minerals, fats and protein!! Thanks Nicole!

The Sentient Machine offers a lively overview of current innovations in artificial intelligence, but disappoints when he actually gets to the topic of sentience. He explains two different types of artificial intelligence, Artificial Narrow Intelligence (ANI) and Artificial General Intelligence (AGI or machine sentience). ANI devices can learn on their own but do not have sentience. We will have achieved AGI when a device has it. ANI devices are all around us, from self-driving cars, to the Internet of Things, to “Mind Hacking” such as in social media advertising. The main part of this book and the part addressed by most reviewers addresses only ANI. AGI “explodes into existence” when an “I” emerges with a sense of self and an ability to set its own, grander goals. He tells us that “[e]ven leaders in the artificial intelligence community have a hard time conceiving what this Big Bang might look like and what it could bring.” This, I think, needs more attention. My smart phone is not a bit closer to sentience than the pocket calculator I had in high school fifty years ago, regardless of how many apps I download. Self is not achieved by increments; it’s a different sort of thing, a thing that even neuroscientists have difficulty defining. The Sentient Machine does not explore this problem. Hussain romps through the current state of non-sentient ANI. While he presents some frightening applications, such as AI weapons and mind hacking, he is pervasively optimistic about their promise and our ability to handle them. And with AI weapons systems, for example, hey, others are going to develop them, so we must as well. He may be right, but if we’re going to have weapons that act independently, shouldn’t there be a public conversation about this? In Part Three, Hussain turns from the ANI we see around us to a future with AGI. The fears about AGI are first, that it might make us obsolete, and second that it might kill us. ANI is already making us obsolete. 38% of US jobs as of 2017 will be automated by 2030. Against the prospect of massive future unemployment, he suggests that we separate our identity from our livelihood, since the need (opportunity?) to work for a living will disappear. If we are not what we do, who are we? He sets out in two pages (!) to explain the meaning of life. It must, he asserts, lie in that which is uniquely human. We find values like love, charity and loyalty in other species. “Are even these attributes worth preserving at all costs? I’m not sure.” He concludes (with little attention to competing theories) that “the essence of our fundamental purpose is to gain knowledge.” AGI, in his view, can free us from the need to earn a living to focus on gaining knowledge. This is a cheery conclusion from someone in the information business. In this view, knowledge is an inherent good, rather than being inherently neutral, either good or evil depending on its application. His focus on what is uniquely human sets him on the gnostic path of salvation through knowledge. However, what if our most precious trait is widely shared among living things and has its origins deep in the shadows of our evolutionary past, such as our ability to care for one another? If our starting point is cultivating the inherent dignity and worth of each individual, won’t our exploration lead us to a very different goal? Additionally, he acknowledges that currently half the world’s wealth is in the hands of eight individuals. He imagines that AGI might create a world where the masses will live in dignified leisure in the pursuit of knowledge. However, with technological advances, we already have the ability to assure that no child in the world goes to bed hungry. We could do this, but we’d rather put our money toward an iPhone X or an OLED TV. Currently, an increasing share of the value of the world’s goods and services comes from the input of machines rather than people. So the fruit of the world’s production goes to the owners of the machines, rather than the workers. Hussain tells us that the eight richest individuals have as much wealth as the poorest half of the world. Four of the top eight owe their fortunes to information and communication technology. When the singularity comes, these guys, or people like them, will own it. Technology is driving further concentration of wealth. Won’t AGI accelerate this? Shouldn’t we have a public conversation about this? Hussain replaces this public conversation with unalloyed optimism and fairy dust. A distinguishing characteristic of AGI, Hussain tells us, will be its ability to set its own goals. AI differs from human intelligence in that it explores all possibilities, whereas the mind prunes options for efficiency, and considers only those options. This difference allowed AlphaGo to beat the world Go master. AGI will be a self-teaching machine that sets its own goals and thinks in a way that is beyond human thought, and therefore, he says, cannot be judged by human standards. He gives an unfortunate analogy for this. When a new alpha male takes over a pride of lions, it kills all the cubs. But we as humans can’t judge lions by human standards. Similarly, he says, AGI will be a higher order of being, and not subject to human judgment. (What if it kills all the cubs?) Hussain is enraptured with the possibilities of creating minds (machines) unencumbered by the restrictions of human biology, human history and common sense, discovering things that we could never conceive of. Since it thinks differently, faster, with more information, how will we possibly evaluate its findings? If it has the ability to act, how can we question its actions? Shouldn’t we at least talk about this? Hussain is unperturbed by this prospect, since he sees the universe and biological systems as computers, since they can be explained by computational processes. For him, handing the world over to an AGI machine is little more than a system upgrade. But the fact that you can make an analogy between humans and computers does not mean that humans are computers. The explanation is not the thing. A recipe is not a cake. An algorithm may be beautiful, but it does not have inherent dignity and worth. One might hope that a book called The Sentient Machine would offer a measured consideration of such questions. Instead, cheerleading Hussain ends with a virtual confession of faith. “We must plant the seeds of artificial intelligence as our ultimate creation and give it the ability and agency to become what it will eventually become. . . . Let there be AI.” Open Pandora’s box. What’s the worst that can happen?

Although I gained some knowledge about AI, I expected a bit more. I lost interest several times while reading this book but I wanted to give it a chance and finish it. Author is too biased on some issues, like advantages of military use of AI. I just see the world differently than him. AI is a big threat to humanity and we can't just say "Let there be AI." We're probably already past the point of no return. We'll just have to see what the future holds.

Husain expertly introduces the concepts behind artificial intelligence and paints an optimistic view that this technology can help people rather than being a doomsday device. It is well written and is quite easy to understand.

A compelling and entertaining journey into the emerging computer technologies of artificial intelligence, neural networks, the Internet of Things, augmented reality, cyber-currencies, computer security, and social networks, and their likely role and influence on the future of humanity. Well worth the time.

Throughout The Sentient Machine, Amir Husain challenges the reader to ask the hard questions, while also conveying a sense of hope through insightful stories of both his life and commentary on one of today’s biggest topics: Artificial Intelligence. While some prominent figures such as Elon Musk have created a public fear of how AI will be a net negative on society to put it nicely, Mr. Husain provides an alternate view on how AI should be embraced with the benefits to society that it brings not only today, but for generations to come. This resonated with me as a I continually see problems that could benefit from a machine learning solution. Gone are the days of traditional brute force solutions (throwing more people on a problem, better computer hardware etc.), but a fundamental change to think about how we can use neural networks (among other machine learning approaches) and truly embrace where computers can accelerate and benefit our society.Few books can captivate the reader with a perfect combination of the author’s own insights, but also invoke questions after reading simply a paragraph (something I found myself doing quite often as I read the book).If you’re looking for a book to dive into Artificial Intelligence I highly recommend The Sentient Machine

I find the chapter on mind hacking particularly resonant in today’s social media universe. The discussion of tribal and religious narratives enlightening.

This book forecasts the incredible potential of sentient machines- robots (bots) with human characteristics and super- human intellectual capacity. I specifically recommend it to all who have an interest in the future of our human existence.
