John MacArthur recently reached his 50-year milestone of pastoring Grace Community Church. What kept him going after all these years? How was he able to remain faithful?Commentary on 2 CorinthiansIn his own characteristic fashion, this book from John MacArthur is an exposition and commentary on 2 Corinthians 4. He gives a full view of what we know from Paul as revealed in Scripture. Some will find reading MacArthur to be dry. He sticks to the facts and gets to the point. Being familiar with his work, I found this volume to be quite refreshing as it was the perfect length for a study on God’s servant.Characteristics and QualitiesThe book is divided into nine short chapters. He uses cross-references and illustrations from the lives of others. Unsurprisingly, his Scripture Index is almost double the length of his General Index.By the end of the book, the answer is clear: MacArthur has been able to remain faithful in ministry by mimicking what he sees in the Apostle Paul. He is totally convinced of his character and clearly sees his special qualities.John MacArthur and the Apostle PaulMost revealing is when MacArthur says what Paul has meant to him personally. He answers whether he thinks much about how people might react to his preaching. He says, like Paul, he is simply called to be an ambassador.MacArthur also sees himself as Timothy, who sought to emulate Paul and follow his example. I thank God for giving me the example of John MacArthur, who I myself would like to follow in his footsteps of faithfulness in ministry to our Lord.Crossway has provided me with a complimentary copy of Remaining Faithful in Ministry: 9 Essential Convictions for Every Pastor through their Blog Review Program.

Wow! Just when I thought I'd seen in all in over twenty-five years of full time ministry, along comes John MacArthur's newest release, Remaining Faithful in Ministry: 9 Essential Convictions for Every Pastor. This book reminds the reader of the apostle Paul's struggles and what he dealt with with the church in Corinth (and that's just the introduction!) This is a short book, only seventy pages, but packed full of life-affirming information that is vital to all pastors. This is one to keep and read again, especially when times get hard.

This is an easy-to read book that contains excellent encouragement and guidance for folks in ministry (pros and lay folk alike). MacArthur, in his usual fashion, provide direct, no frills, bible-based guidance to help folks stay on the straight and narrow path. Small chapters, each with an engaging truth, makes this an easy read with lots of nuggets for application.

Excellent and brief (around 70 pages) read on convictions a pastor must have in the ministry. Each chapter is less than 10 pages and contains good insights and exhortations to remain faithful in ministry. Each chapter also focuses around a few verses in which MacArthur makes his point. Will be read again sometime.

A quick look at the table of contents and you will realize that John Mac Arthur’s new book “Remaining Faithful in Ministry: 9 Essential Convictions for Every Pastor” does not apply to pastors alone but to every faithful follower of the Lord Jesus Christ. The Apostle Paul’s life example and New Testament letters to the churches call on individuals to run the race, follow his example and follow Jesus. Mac Arthur urges pastors to lead the way in recognizing nine essentials convictions as noted in the sub-title of the book.John MacArthur continues to bring a forceful clarion call to pastors to remain faithful to the Word of God, the power of the Gospel message, and the application of the Scriptures in daily living.“Remaining Faithful in Ministry: 9 Essential Convictions for Every Pastor” challenges pastors to remain faithful to their calling and continue to take a stand for their convictions.Highly recommended.

Review

“A painfully honest and hilarious parenting book for us non-parenting-book-reading underachievers trying to survive the whole parenting experience. You know, I really could have used this book before my kids drove me insane. Next time write faster, James.” —Brian Gordon, creator of the webcomic Fowl Language “James Breakwell’s “Bare Minimum Parenting: The Ultimate Guide to Not Quite Ruining Your Child” is a witty and refreshing take on parenting in a modern world. I have always enjoyed following James’ parental trials and tribulations on social media and it’s fun to seeing his musings come to life in this essential handbook!” —Rebecca Mader, actress on Once Upon a Time and Lost “I’ve never felt so guilt-free ignoring my child to read a book.” —Laura Perlongo, Shorty Award-winning cohost of the web series We Need to Talk and guest commentator on MTV’s Catfish “Breakwell has a hit . . . uproariously funny, and at times, unexpectedly poignant.” — Liliana Hart, New York Times bestselling author and mom of five “Oh, parents! Read this book and free yourself from the blood sport that parenting has become! With humor, insight and honesty, smart-ass James Breakwell tells you what no other parenting book has the guts to say—relax. You and the kids will be just fine.” —Kristan Higgins, New York Times bestselling author “James Breakwell’s Bare Minimum Parenting is a rollicking, entertaining manifesto for the half-assed revolution. Reading it was WAY more fun than writing my own books and raising my own kids.” —Carolyn Parkhurst, New York Times bestselling author of The Dogs of Babel and Harmony “As a father of three children ages 25, 17, and 3, who are all reasonably well adjusted and jail-free, James Breakwell’s views on kids and parenting speaks to my soul. This book brings balance to the 300,000 misguided ‘how to raise the perfect child’ books out there that increase our stress level as if answering 500 why questions from a toddler every day weren't stressful enough! If you have a kid, are planning on having a kid, or have friends who have kids and want to hold on to some of your sanity, this book is a must-read!” —Jaime Casap, chief education evangelist at Google and free range parent “I don't have any kids, and still I loved this book. I laughed and laughed, and then I reached the part about raising a child in your thirties or forties and I cried.” —David Litt, former speechwriter for President Obama and bestselling author of Thanks, Obama “A parenting book like no other. Wise, hilarious and a must-read for harassed, guilt-ridden parents everywhere. Parenting doesn't have to be high maintenance. Don't believe me? Like James Breakwell I have 4 kids. They all somehow survived into adulthood, so I didn't *need* to read a book on parenting. I was mostly looking for validation that doing less was more.If you follow James on and of the social medias you already know he's a funny guy. He's an Erma Bombeck for a generation that has no idea who I'm talking about. Hidden in his humor is a lot of truth that all parents have experienced. He doesn't try to trick you into thinking you've failed in comparison to his perfect family.I expected this book to be funny. I expected to see my life in parts of it. I didn't expect to find a lot of actual advice, but it's there. The first sentence of the last chapter sums it up best. You're not the first person to struggle as a parent. He's right, you're not. We all do & despite Instagram posts you the contrary, none of us are perfect. Read this book. You'll feel much better about your own parenting skills.

Finally, someone has written a book that matches the effort my teen puts into life, school, etc.! I enjoy James Breakwell on social media, but this book is the next level! Not only did it have me laughing out loud but it is truly nice to know that you are not the only parent out there who feels like they are making it all up as they go along. I hope to be reading more of James Breakwell's books in the future.

“Becoming a grown-up is the second-most expensive mistake you’ll ever make. The first is having a kid.” - chapter 5If you follow James Breakwell on social media, then you know his sense of humor. If not, then you’re in for a hilarious ride. While I have the physical book, I read this in Breakwell’s voice. It reads as he talks, as he tweets, as he posts. There are many, many hilarious moments, broken with some serious and legitimate points. This “unbook” to parenting is a must-have for anyone with any number of children.Or, in my case, someone who teaches them. And as a non-parent teacher, I whole-heartedly approve of the overall message for parents to sometimes just CHILL BACK. Do not be an overbearing, overachieving (albeit, not an UNDERachieving either) parent.Have a drink. Have a laugh.Take a step back and look at the big picture.Breakwell reminds us that there is no perfect time to have a child. And there is no perfect way of parenting. After all, none of them will be “the Chosen One,” and everyone ends up the same (in a way), anyway. You don’t know which adults were natural births or C-sections; who was or was not breastfed; who co-slept and who didn’t.His Christianity is evident to someone who knows what to look for. After all, Breakwell talks about the pros and cons of having a child at various times of one’s life, from being a teen to being erm… “old as hell” (aka, over 50).His geekery/pop culture knowledge is evident in how he talks about ‘Star Wars,’ Middle Earth, Cthulhu, and video games.I cried from laughing so hard.I have so many things quoted that I might as well retype the book as one stupendous quote.Chapter 3 was utterly hilarious from the first sentence.Provided your child doesn’t blame you for all that goes wrong in their life, you have a good future in store for you.The more money you have, the more complaints you have. The more money you have, the more you’ll spend on “better” baby items.Welcome to the monetarily poorest days of life.I love that he describes pros and cons of many things, from having more than one child (entertainment and saving money on hand-me-downs), to taking pictures (they have to know they were loved), to education, to food choices. With education, there is an absolutely great reminder that stats are ‘averages,’ and any individual child should not be measured against those stats. Focus on your own kid. Plus, a lot of the stats are steeped in money, and a knowledge base is contributed to by many other factors.

Yes, yes, I know this book is just humor, but if you’re an anxious parent, it will relax you. If you’re a relaxed parent, it will make you feel good about yourself. And if your kids are grown, it may prompt flashbacks along with gratitude that they are no longer toddlers.

As a first-time parent, this book has been incredibly uplifting to read. The author is incredibly witty and brings levity to raising a child. I followed this author on twitter for a while before purchasing his book and was kind of expecting a laugh out loud book of anecdotes, but found something much more empowering. With the world shouting at you and constantly judging every decision you make as a parent from the diapers you use to the amount of time you let a kid stare at a screen, I feel like the author is an advocate for the parent as a living and breathing person. Thanks James, awesome work!

I get that this was written as a satirical look at parenting books, but it is so well done and so true for parents like me that I regularly quote it on parenting groups as gospel. It seems like Breakwell has been taking notes on my husband and my theory of "lazy parenting" and has an awesome grasp on what really matters in creating real people who will live in the real world without making yourself crazy for no reason. I mean, I'd take a bullet for my kids, but I'm not really interested in picking their socks of the floor for the rest of my life.

Review

A fascinating new book... (Steve Serby, Sports Columnist New York Post)I really enjoy your writing and how you tell the story. (Pete Spadora Spadora on Sports)You have again handled the Seaver subject matter with aplomb. (Marty Lurie, San Francisco Giants' pre-game host)...[A]nyone who grew up admiring Tom Terrific will enjoy reading. Clearly New Yorkers and Mets fans will get the most out of this book, but anyone who has ever debated just who the best pitcher in baseball's long history will find grist for the mill within the pages. (AtHomePlate.com)...[a] must-read for any Mets fan, and for any baseball fan for that matter. (Diane LaRue, Book Chick Di blog)...[A] friendly, well-researched book about one of the great men of all time... (Eric Alterman, The Nation)

The title and the subject have such great promise and this book does an OK job covering the man who more than any other defined NY baseball in the late 60s and early 70s. Maybe it's unfair, but I expected better; something more akin to a Kahn's Boys of Summer or Charles Einstein's Willie's Time. Travers is maybe a little too excited or swept up in his iconography of Seaver and got lost in his own fascination of the man. On the one hand there are great details about the highlights of Seaver's career - coming to the Mets, the almost no-hitter against the Cubs, and of course the 69 and 73 pennant races and World Series games. The book also does a good job describing, from the pitcher's perspective, the events leading up to the Cincinnati trade. In between though are somewhat incomplete observations about who he did and didn't get along with, Seaver's ease in crossing racial lines, and his commitment to his family and maintaining his own set of values. None of this is bad or inaccurate (as far as I might know) but much of it is oddly placed, not always in context or rehashed in other chapters. What I truly enjoyed about this work was the devotion to detail of the 69 and 73 seasons, as well as other highlight periods in Seaver's career. Travers is good about taking you back to games that I distinctly remember watching on WOR, listening to on the radio or actually seeing at Shea. Those memories alone make the book worthwhile.

Overall a decent book. Would rate it a 2 for those who saw Seaver's career unfold and a 4 for those who never had the opportunity to see him pitch.Unfortunately, the author is an over the top Seaver fan and seems to think it necessary to emphasize that Seaver's record would have been better had he had more run support. When he won 20 the author says he should have won 30! When he won 15, the author says he should have won 20!! he won 3 Cy Youngs-the author argues he should have had twice as many!!!Long story short(and i am a Yankee fan and not a great fan of Seaver) Tom Seaver is a 300 game winner,3 time Cy Young award winner, a near unanimous first ballot Hall of Famer and in the discussion to be one of the greatest pitchers of all time. It is unnecessary to cheapen his legacy by making silly excuses for why he should have been even more successful than he was.

very informative and entertaining

I've loved the Mets since 1977 and this is one of the worst Mets or sports books I've read due to the author's slavish devotion to Tom Terrific. i did not feel I got a balanced story from the author who was clearly a Seaver fan. Only the positive attributes of the subject were stressed and you are force fed that Seaver could do no wrong (almost) and he was always three steps above everyone else.If you are a Mets fan you will not learn one new fact or insight about Tom Seaver. Avoid this book.

This is a poorly written, poorly researched, bit of fluff. If you want to learn more about Tom Seaver, professionally and/or personally, don't expect to learn it here. Not sure how or why this was even published.

Without this masterpiece of baseball writing, I wouldn't have known Shea Stadium was in Manhattan and Joe DiMaggio was amoral. And this is within the first 60 pages, with more nonsense to come. This book is worthless crap, stay away.

I've long admired pitching star Tom Seaver, both for his ability to play baseball and for his intelligence. Thus, I was eager to read this biography of Seaver. To say I was tremendously disappointed would be an understatement. This was probably the worst book I've read this year. If you like your biographies to be objective and/or balanced, this is not the book for you. However, if you like fawning, gushing hero worship, essentially a hagiography, you might enjoy this one.The writing was so flowery and, at times over the top, that it was tough to read this book, except with a horrified fascination. Also, the author was just plain mean, in a weird, almost childish, way, towards many of Seaver's competitors and/or opponents. For example, of San Diego Padre pitcher Randy Jones, the author calls him a "figure barely recalled by history who also could not carry Seaver's dirty jockstrap." Others were said to not hold a candle to the great Seaver. You get the idea. Lots of opinions without facts to back them up.When Seaver's record was substandard or he did not win an award that the author believes Seaver should've won, the author piles on excuses. Seaver's team never scored any runs for him, unlike pitchers on other teams, apparently. Others were just jealous of him and his greatness, or so it was claimed, again and again and again. The personal information provided about Seaver was interesting, at times, but the author included far too many generalizations. How can we really know that he was the last of the nonadulterous baseball player in the majors? How can we know that some of his teammates followed his lead in this regard? Was there a survey taken? The author adds: "Curiously, the 'quintessential Seaver book' was never written ... until, finally, this one!" Somehow, I don't think so.Maybe someday, the quintessential Seaver bio will be written. I look forward to reading that book. Unfortunately, this is not the quintessential Seaver bio.
