Sara Pitzer makes the growing of grain comprehensible and easy for those who have never tried it. There is good information on types of grain, the forms it is sold in, and detailed instructions for culture, including spacing of seed and rows (this is hard to find info). Most info on the web is aimed at farmers with tractors and seeders, and for cultivating acre sized plots. This book will be helpful to those with smaller plots. There are many recipes in the book, something I could have done without, but others may find useful. There is also excellent info on how to purchase the correct grain mill to grind fresh flour. I would say this book is well worth the purchase price and fun to read.

Great little book. This is not an academic treatise on the various and scientific niceties of growing grain. This is written to and for anyone without agricultural expertise. Instructions on growing and processing grains are concise and complete. The book also has some nice recipes. The only thing I'd like to have seen included is a short glossary for some of the terminology (lodging, e.g.), but those are easy enough to look up.

…written more for the gardener who wants to experiment with something different. You get short summaries of pretty much all the details you'd really need to get started. I found it kind of vague as to yields for grain types ( no "plant …square feet to feed …people") but appreciated the advice to try a small first planting because you might find the work involved to be too much. Not a farmers book but a home gardeners book. Recipes given for each grain too.At the back there's a resource list for grain, tools, internet information, even a few books.

This book is exactly what I wanted: a quick guide to growing grains at home. She is an excellent writer and I like how she is realistic about the effort and difficulty required to process some of the crops. You can tell that she has done all of this many times and has observed other people doing it, and she knows where the problems will arise, especially in the discouragement department. The list of seed sources in the back is very useful. When I got this book I opened it up and read it through and had trouble putting it down. Thanks, Ms. Pitzer.

This was a great resource on growing grains. Based on the information here, I decided to try to grow oats and barley in my wet and cool northern climate. The hull-less varieties I selected grew well enough, but the barley soon succumbed to aphids that loved the thick, juicy stems. The oats with their thin stems didn't attract any aphids, but the seed heads didn't open properly due to mold forming on the husks. It was a tedious job to squeeze the seeds out of the seed husks. The book is a great introduction to growing grains and also gives recipes for each type of grain.

Lots of info, very informative. After reading this book I feel ready to go out and prepare the field and plant. This book clearly lays out the positives and negatives of growing each grain and makes suggestions on where to buy the best seed, how to prepare soil, how to maintain until harvest, how to harvest, and how to prepare for storage. Even gives recipes to help you use your grain. And the illustrations of the plants and grains up close are very helpful.

Truly covers all that you need to know to start growing small plots of grain at home.In not much room, you can provide a significant portion of your food grains each year!Excellent resources list toward the back, for buying all those little things that USED to be common in every toolshed, but you don't see around any more. Seed distributors, tools, scythes, lists for everything.I highly recommend this book!

It's the perfect book for a beginner like myself. Simple and easy to comprehend. Great resource for someone who wants to grow a small patch of grain in their backyard. Definitely not for anyone who may be well seasoned in growing grain.

Silent Warriors, Incredible Courage: The Declassified Stories of Cold War Reconnaissance Flights and the Men Who Flew Them

Book Description

The thrilling secret history of the American pilots who risked their lives to protect their country during the Cold WarThis beautifully written book gives vital insight into an often overlooked but vitally important era of the Cold War, the incomparably brave reconnaissance flights by US aircraft around and into territory of the Soviet Union. It was a time when jet aircraft were new, the Cold War was blooming, and any mistakes could have been fatal. This gives the inside story from the viewpoint of the brave and incredibly skilled airmen who flew dangerous missions to keep the US safe. (Colonel Walter J. Boyne, USAF (Ret.), former Director of the National Air and Space Museum)Here at last is an account that fills a major gap in our knowledge of those years and brings back into the picture a substantial number of Americans who risked their lives―and sometimes lost them―in protecting this country but who could not be publicly recognized for their great service at the time. (Dr. Gerhard L. Weinberg, professor emeritus at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and author of A World at Arms: A Global History of World War II)As readable as any adventurous spy story. This book will be a valuable contribution to the literature about American reconnaissance. (Al Stettner, docent, National Air and Space Museum)Excellent, both in terms of structure and story. (Richard Hallion, historian, National Aeronautics and Space Administration and USAF)

#14,127 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

In Book 1, I thoroughly enjoyed the even-handed politics, the science, and the intrigue associated with interesting, intelligent characters, whose experiences informed the overall topic (a real and potentially apocalyptic, natural event).Book 2 immediately collapses into a typical gun-toting, dystopian, hoarding form of chaos, in which the best characters die, the President goes underground, small town people charge $20 a gallon for gas, and the HEROES of the first novel mount a desperate attempt to reach the shelter of a hoarder's dream, killing "marauders" indiscriminately.I tried to overlook the nonsense about the Bundy Brothers as reflective of the character's prejudices, but when I read the author's narrative missives about folks "rushing to judgment" when police kill unarmed black kids, and the suggestion that Northern California was where normal people traveled to escape the "loonies," I realized I was reading the missives of an old man whose time has past. It's almost as if some shameful political event happened in the world between the times that the books were authored.Look, I have family members with resources, money, and underground stores of cash, weapons, and food. In the event of a real apocalypse, they will be the first to go down, and the real heroes will be the people who band together to prevent savagery in the name of survival. So, read all these books, if trading in bars of gold and killing strangers "Mad Max" style turns you on. If you enjoyed the first book for it's scientific approach to potential hazards, stop there.

The descriptions of the eruption of the Yellowstone caldera will literally take your breath away, no pun intended. While the heroics of many will bring back hope that all will be well for Jake and Ashby, nature has a way of bringing one back to reality. Bobby Akart never fails to keep one on the edge of their seat and YELLOWSTONE; INFERNO is no exception. Heroes will risk life and limb to save friends but prepare for a very sad future.Again the characters make you love them and root for them, the descriptions of Yellowstone will amaze you, but more importantly if you have read the news in the last few weeks you will see why I can’t help but call Bobby Akart the Nostradamus of our age. Bobby has drawn a picture that will scare the hell out of you, especially if you read the recent reports from Yellowstone or look at the scientific history that makes it clear history will forecast the future. We know that eruptions are happening much more often than they have for many years and that the possibility of another major eruption can happen at any time, WE JUST DON’T KNOW WHEN. Ashby has lived through an eruption that took away her family can she live through another and what loved ones will be lost this time. Jake will be called on to perform feats that most men could never do and push back ghosts from his past to succeed. Can he do it, or will his beloved Yellowstone destroy him. They will face nature at her most beautiful and most dangerous. Bobby introduces many great characters some good and some not so good, including the Bounder, another great SHTF vehicle, that will hopefully provide safe passage as the heroes try to find a place that will be safe, afford them protection, a place to settle and make a new home in a new world, but the foe they face, both nature and human, has different plans and a giant reach that could bring on the end of the world as we know it. I am officially begging for the next book in the series, as Bobby has left us with another cliff hanger, just as you think they might be home!!

Rick Younger, head of the Yellowstone Volcanic Observatory and executive of Project Hydro, really thought that piercing the unstable magma chamber under Yellowstone and pumping water into the mantle would drive turbines to create energy was safe and was a good idea. Dr. Ashby Donovan thought otherwise and was vocal in her opposition. Dr. Donovan and her two students, Dusty Holder and Rita Charles, were part of NASA's VIPER program studying volcanoes around the planet. Immediately on beginning the study of the Yellowstone Caldera, observed that Project Hydro was destabilizing the magma chamber below the caldera. Forest fires caused by lava reaching the surface, poison gas discharging through fissures, and an earthquake induced tsunami swept over the Yellowstone lake were signs of an eminent eruption of the super volcano. In this case, she really hated being right. The amazing cast of characters brilliantly guide the storyline through the politics of disaster and the struggles of survival. Painstakingly crafted and lovingly guided through the action, the heroes of this tale lead us carefully through the horror of a world-ending event. They show us the methods of survival as they navigate through the dangers while their relationship becomes more romantic. So lovingly developed, Jake and Ashby are like members of our family, best friends we've known for years, and the best kind of humanity we wish we could know. The story here is Yellowstone super volcano and it's capability to end the world as we know it. Be it prophesy or good story telling, the author has once again brought us a masterpiece of horror. Whether it's for the amazing story, the warm characters, or the methods of preparing for survival, this series is a must read! Don't take my word for it. Read it yourself and tell me you don't agree! Betcha can't!

How to Know the Birds: The Art and Adventure of Birding, by Ted Floyd

Review

“Like the Petersonian original, this new How to Know the Birds is illustrated with simple and appealing drawings, this time from the pencil of N. John Schmitt. The cover is a tour de force of book design, with words and image overlapped and intertwined—a perfect evocation of what is inside, a wonderful text combining science, art, and joy in a way sure to inspire any birder.” –Tucson Audubon"You can’t find a better guide to birds and birding than Ted Floyd. This snappy, chatty book is a fascinating primer to both, and will make you a much better, wiser birder." --Scott Weidensaul, author of Living on the Wind"What a delightful study of birds and birding, smart, witty, engaging, and beautifully observed.  If you love birds and want to know them (and their devoted watchers) better, this book is for you--to dip into and to revisit for the priceless rules of thumb."  --Jennifer Ackerman“Birding is our most democratic way to connect to nature, because birds are everywhere — from inner cities to the deepest wilderness. Here’s a new take on birding certain to inspire people to connect more deeply with the lives around them." —Richard Louv, author of Last Child in the Woods, The Nature Principle and Vitamin N"This is an introduction to 21st century birding, where digital tools, global data sharing, and an acknowledgement of the dynamism of a rapidly changing earth combine with good old fashioned love of the birds. Ted Floyd teaches us that seeing the bird and checking it off a list isn’t really the core pleasure of birding—it is knowing  the bird—its behavior, ecology, personality, and role in the evolving human ecology of the Anthropocene, that is the true pleasure of contemporary birding. Buy it for anyone you want to fall in love with birds, or for yourself, so as to fall in love a bit more."–Emma Marris, author of Rambunctious Garden“Birds—clearly the heroes in this engaging volume—have so much to teach us about ourselves and our world. You’ll find your curiosity and delight growing with each page.”  –David Yarnold, President and CEO of the National Audubon Society.

How to Know the Birds: The Art and Adventure of Birding by Ted Floyd is a book which intends to inform novice and enthusiasts alike. Mr. Floyd is the editor of Birding Magazine and, of course, an avian aficionado himself.I know next to nothing about birds, sometimes I wish I knew more, especially when out in nature with the kids. Not to worry though, that doesn’t happen very often. But I always enjoy learning new stuff. How to Know the Birds: The Art and Adventure of Birding by Ted Floyd consists of short, readable sections on many types of bird. It is clear from the writing that the author is not only knowledgeable, but also very enthusiastic about every word printed.I was expecting an off-the-shelf bird watching field guide, with pictures, stats and identifiers – but this is not this type of book. Instead I got a memoir / guide, which allowed me to appreciate birds more than I ever thought would be possible for me.For a novice like myself, I enjoyed the introductory section which talked about birds that I often see in my back yard. As a technologist, the section of how technology changed ornithology was especially fascinating.Even though bird watching has changed with the times, Mr. Floyd does insist that some things do stay the same. Learn as much as you can and appreciate nature for what it is.

This is a delightful book to keep by your side for a quick read when you have 5 or 10 minutes here or there. To me, it wasn’t the kind of book you sat down and read from cover to cover. It is comprised of a series of essays taken from Birding Magazine. This is not a bird identification book, it offers insights into bird behaviors and into the birding world. The reader will learn about migration patterns, how bird classifications work, why birds came to be named what they are named; I was fascinated to learn that the pileated woodpecker got his name from a Latin word that means felt hat. There are many more interesting tidbits to learn about our avian friends in this handy book. It’s the kind of book you keep by the bed to read a few essays before you go to sleep. As it has no plot there is nothing to keep you from stopping after an essay finishing and you end on a learning note.I received a free copy for my honest review

Although the beautiful cover of Birding magazine editor Ted Floyd's How to Know the Birds may lead you to believe that this will be your typical book about birds, you would be wrong. Many bird books are field guides, with page after page of color photos or drawings of birds, along with short descriptions of what the bird look like and where you find them. Floyd's book is different. He begins by describing the history of birding, referencing the seminal books in the field. It was a quiet, gentle, often solitary study by people with sketchpads, pencils, binoculars and notebooks. Then he takes us into the present, where birding has evolved like most things- people use their smartphones to take photos to upload to numerous Facebook pages devoted to birding. There are apps to help birders organize and connect with other birders. It is much more immediate and social.Floyd introduces us to 200 bird species, each one getting a page but not necessarily a drawing. (There are a small number of beautiful pencil drawings by N. John Schmitt that accompany some of the text.)The contents are divided into six sections, organized by the calendar year, beginning with Spark Bird, which covers January-February. He discusses the birds you will likely find during those months in North America, gives the common name for the bird, such as American Robin, then its scientific name Turdus migratorius, which always capitalizes the first letter of the first name and the second name always begins with a smaller case letter. He gives you a short description of the bird, and interesting fact about the bird that is the title of the page. For the essay titled He Says, She Says, we learn about the Great Horned Owl and the difference between the sounds the male and female makes. In The Upside of Human-Modified Landscapes, he talks about the Canada Goose and how these geese have evolved to "flourish in human-dominated landscapes" living near high-rise office buildings, on golf courses and wreaking havoc near airports.Floyd sprinkles in pop culture references, talking about the movie On Golden Pond in the essay about the Common Loon, or comparing a Star Trek TV series scene to a large nest which holds a tiny Bushtit. He of course mentions the Jack Black/Steve Martin movie The Big Year, perhaps the only movie about birding ever made. The book ends with a helpful checklist of all the birds described by species. How to Know the Birds is really written for the person who enjoys birding as a serious hobby more than for a person looking to get into birding. It would make a wonderful gift for your favorite birder, maybe in an Easter basket.

I highly recommend this book to people over 50, people under 50 who are feeling uninspired, to people who are questioning their faith in these trying times and well, to anyone. It isn’t just about an old lady running. It is an memoir of a black woman living and growing up in New York City from before World War One until now and how she just keeps keeping on despite unbelievable adversity. Besides telling her story in a conversational voice that I swear was in the room with me at times, I believe she wrote a book that is truly of historical significance. #Ilovegoodbooks #readit #getinspired

How may books have you read that was written by a centenarian? This book is incredible! This is a book that portrays a positive image of Aging African Americans.

It has always been an honor to say that I have known Ms. Ida Keeling as a friend and neighbor for at least the past 10 years. She has always been my idol, and my inspiration. However, it wasn't until I read her book, "Can't Nothing Bring Me Down", that I can say I truly know her. Once I started reading this book, I couldn't put it down. In this book she takes you on a riveting, compassionate journey of her life. The races she has won are mere metaphors for all that she has overcome and accomplished in her life. "Can't Nothing Bring Me Down" is a must read. I bought 3 copies for my Granddaughter, Sons and myself, and I plan to buy more copies for my family and friends. Ms. Ida is a remarkable woman and this is an excellent book that is beautifully written.

I really enjoyed the blend of history with personal experience. You feel you get to know Ida well thru her triumphs and difficulties. It inspired and encouraged me that the human spirit can get thru anything with God's help.

I just received this book, no spoilers here. I sat down and read it from cover to cover. Yes I smiled, laughed a little, nodded and even shed a few tears. Ida is without knowing, paying it forward by sharing her story. If you can’t find a reason to Really Live your Life, to get to the Blessed side of what a gift each day is, then you need to read Ida Keeling. Ida has aroused new life in me, a real get up and get out there newness. A renewed appreciation for the day, here and now. For my life such as it has been, is and will be, I am grateful with a deeper sense of the meaning. A mother knows no greater love than that of her children. Cheryl, thank you for opening the door of life to what is yet to be. My path is brighter for you having done so. I highly recommend this book for self or as a gift.

I love the integration of her personal history, the historic events that she witnessed, the biblical perspective, and her personal experiences. She has such an inspiring story to tell. This is a must read for everyone, especially those that are parents or intend to be parents.

Brave, ethical, spiritual, industrious, and on and on. This lady overcomes adversity with an arsenal of good values and core strength. I loved her every word and wish her continuous success laying an honorable path for us to follow. Thank you Ida

Ms Keeling is a woman of spirit and determination. She is honest about the hardship she faced as an African American woman growing up over the last century. She is inspiring because she did not let that hardship stand in the way of making the best life she could for her family. I cried when she was not able to get her high school diploma because her father would not give her $8 for her final project. I cheered as she ran races and grew stronger, with the help of her daughter, and found her voice along with her energy.
