I cannot say enough about Breuss Cancer Cure. Years ago my uncle got diagnosed with cancer. He was pretty late into it and only had about 6 months to live. They sent him home and he started Breuss Cancer Cure and he ended up gaining the weight back, getting healthy again and living 9 years. He died of a heart attack not cancer. I was young back then, maybe in high school and did not pay much attention to it while it was happening, but recently my brother was diagnosed with cancer and they gave him 3 options; radiation pills, chemotherapy, or try herbal medicines on your own. So, he tried the Bruess Cancer Cure first. He was to return for more blood work and another biopsy in six months. He did the Bruess Cancer Cure with the vegetable juice and the tea's as per the book. He followed it to the 'letter' for the full 41 days. He was weak from not eating and his co-workers picked up his slack especially need the end of the 41 days. He finally made it and went in for the blood work. The blood work came back and there was no change in the blood work. We were all pretty disappointed. But, when he went in for the biopsy it was totally gone. No trace of cancer. Now he is eating healthier and is cancer free. That was enough for me to buy a 21 day supply. Figure I will do the 21 day version to to help clean my system out from all the crap we are eating these days. Hope this review was helpful and it is totally a true story.

I own this specific book (The Breuss Cancer Cure, offered on Amazon)in English, and I also own the Serbian translation of the original book (which was written in German). The original name of the book is "Krebs, Leukemie und andere scheinbar unheilbare Krankeiten mit naturlichen Mitteln heilbar" and the Serbian version has the more or less literally translated title "Cancer, Leukemia and other seemingly incurable illnesses curable in a natural way".The most important thing I noticed is that in the Serbian translation daily enemas are highlighted as being of utmost importance, and yet in this English version enemas are only mentioned on the side, in case of a prolonged constipation. The Serbian translation says that daily (and multiple!) enemas are crucial to the success of the therapy and that without them a person could die from internal poisoning because the therapy will release toxins that have been tucked away in different parts of the body. For something that important you'd expect it to be included in the book in big red letters, not omitted, and yet, as you can read in many reviews here, one of the main things that people find wrong with the "Breuss Cancer Cure" is that there are no daily enemas to help the cleansing process.I don't know which translation is correct, I don't speak German in order to check, but someone who does should definitely check out the latest German edition that came out while Breuss was alive and see what this is about - is this English version of the book a deliberate attempt of discrediting the therapy, is it simply a bad translation of someone who didn't care but wanted to make everything seem easier and nicer so it would sell better (starting with the title) or if maybe the Serbian translation is incorrect in a good way. All I know is that people who are pointing out that this could be dangerous or, at least, ineffective without daily enemas are correct, but they shouldn't take it for granted that this specific book is the real Breuss therapy until they check the German original.

After the first time I did the 42-day fast, I was convinced that the human race should strive to maintain alkaline bodies. Not only did my eczema/psoriasis disappear and other issues cleared up, but the unexpected one was that it totally eliminated my lactose intolerance!I'm currently doing a 21-day maintenance fast pre-surgery.I absolutely love this regimen. I have used the bottled juice, but I know that it is definitely not as good as juicing organic vegetables.

It was recommended by a man that was diagnosed with stage 3 prostate cancer, he followed the therapy but I don’t think it worked that great for him, it did helped to control the cancer but something was till there. He doesn’t what to go through surgery of having his prostate to be removed. Now he’s undergoing a new type radiation therapy at the university of California, hopefully that takes care of it.I will say this, alll this idea of fasting it’s definately deveneficial for your health, which ever way you do it, it will bring heath benefits. I heard slfasting twice a month or intermittent fasting is good as well.

Interesting book. The six week fast seems extreme, but compared to chemo and radiation, maybe not so extreme. Worth a try if you have the weight to lose and some supervision. Easy to read, logical and straightforward.

I found the book interesting.. I actually read the entire book on the day it was delivered so it's not long and boring. I find it useful for everyone to read and share with others so that we can heal and detox our bodies naturally.

I am always looking for alternative medicine. You don't have to have cancer to implement Dr. Bruess' methods. This can also be used for preventative. Very well written and extensive research.Fast shipping. Thanks!

The book shows how compositions of herbs can help to overcome different diseases.

After reading just a few pages, it soon becomes obvious why it won awards. However, reading levels and vocabulary have fallen since 1961 when it was published so that most middle school students today will not understand and appreciate the story very well. It's the perfect book to read in English class at the same time students are studying the Roman Empire in History class. There is much useful vocabulary to prepare students for college, as well as many literary devices to discuss, and character development as well. It's a good choice for high school for Christian schools, home schools and students in secular schools writing about books of their choice. Books like this allow a teacher or parent to coordinate history and literature in a unit study.

Elizabeth George Spear is a phenomenal author and this story is wonderful. We read this book aloud to our four kids ages 12 to 5 And the older two children were completely and enraptured with the characters and story line. If you like this book I encourage you to read other books by this timeless author.

Summary:This is the story of Daniel, a young Jewish runaway who's taken up with a band of Zealots and bandits in hopes of driving the hated Romans out of his homeland. When the death of his grandmother forces him to go back home and care for his unhinged sister, he slowly begins to realize how little his carefully honed hatred has done for him, and how little use it is in achieving his ends. As his animosity brings disaster to his friends and destruction to his home, he turns in desperation to the prophet Jesus of Nazareth. My thoughts:Speare's book is well-written, accessible, and full of vitality. The theme of the book - the powerlessness of hatred - is as beautifully depicted here as anywhere, and is portrayed on an excellent level for younger readers (older ones will find that this book dovetails on a thematic level with C.S. Lewis's novel Till We Have Faces). Although this is certainly a Christian work, Jesus is not the main character, and the Christian themes arise organically from the characters themselves. Less satisfying are the statements and actions of Jesus himself. While Speare doesn't quite portray Jesus as an ordinary man, she apparently goes out of her way to avoid phrases like "Son of God" and it's a little unclear whether his miracles are actually miraculous or just the power of personality and suggestion. While this is disappointing and potentially troublesome to an adult reader, it's very unlikely that a reader at the younger end of the spectrum would even notice the inconsistencies. Those passages could even serve as excellent discussion starters.

One of the better fictionalized New Testament stories I've read. In a genre where sometimes the bar isn't set too high, in this book, the characters were well-drawn and interesting. The 1st century setting felt real. The author achieves a real transformation for the main character, Daniel, and it is well-dramatized and affecting. Apparently, this is what would be deemed YA (young adult) category, but I'm an adult and I enjoyed it.

Upon his grandmother’s death, teenaged Daniel returns to the town where he grew up to take care of his demon-possessed sister and take over the blacksmith shop of a friend, Simon, who has become one of Jesus’s disciples. Hoping Jesus is the one to deliver them from the tyranny of the Romans, Daniel and his friends form a group with the bronze bow (from 2 Samuel) as their symbol. The Bronze Bow by Elizabeth George Speare is a wonderful story of what anger and hate can do to us. The setting of first century Galilee and the peripheral character of Jesus Christ works well. I recommend this book to anyone about middle school age and up.

My daughter's Sunday School teacher gave this book to her class as a Christmas present last year, and I recently read it. It was so good that I purchased it for a friend who also enjoys historical Christian fiction. It's very well written, and I learned a lot about the culture of Jesus' day. I think it will give anyone a greater appreciation of the ministry of Jesus, the struggles that the Jewish community experienced under the control of the Romans, and a visualization of the region of Galilee where Jesus spent most of his life an ministry.

Read this myself in middle school and as an adult I still remember how much this impacted me in my youth. Through the point of view of a young boy during the time of Jesus, it was interesting to see how he was influenced even though his life was totally separate and he was going through hard times on top of finding his place in the world. Lots of great core value stuff in here. Got this for my nephew for Christmas but haven't heard yet how he liked it.

Bronze Bow is an excellent, timeless book. It is well written and helps students or adults understand what was going on in Israel during the time of Jesus. It deals with the resistance to the Roman intervention. The best aspect of the book is that Jesus is an important supporting character, but whenever he is directly involved in the plot, he doesn't do or say anything that is not specifically described in the Bible. This book does not proselytize but has a strong theme of forgiveness and sacrifice. It is appropriate for both Christians and non-Christians who are interested in the culture at the time.

From the Inside Flap

We differentiate instruction to honor the reality of the students we teach. They are energetic and outgoing. They are quiet and curious. They are confident and self-doubting. They are interested in a thousand things and deeply immersed in a particular topic. They are academically advanced and "kids in the middle" and struggling due to cognitive, emotional, economic, or sociological challenges. More of them than ever speak a different language at home. They learn at different rates and in different ways. And they all come together in our academically diverse classrooms.Written as a practical guide for teachers, this expanded third edition of Carol Ann Tomlinson's groundbreaking work covers the fundamentals of differentiation and provides additional guidelines and new strategies for how to go about it. You'll learnWhat differentiation is and why it's essentialHow to set up the flexible and supportive learning environment that promotes successHow to manage a differentiated classroomHow to plan lessons differentiated by readiness, interest, and learning profileHow to differentiate content, process, and productsHow to prepare students, parents, and yourself for the challenge of differentiationFirst published in 1995 as How to Differentiate Instruction in Mixed-Ability Classrooms, this new edition reflects evolving best practices in education, the experiences of practitioners throughout the United States and around the world, and Tomlinson's continuing thinking about how to help each and every student access challenging, high-quality curriculum; engage in meaning-rich learning experiences; and feel at home in a school environment that "fits."

I liked how the book develops the case for differentiation in a way that makes sense to teachers. Then the author takes us through the variety of ways to differentiate for students. It gives teachers conceptual ideas and practical ways to implement those ideas. Although the process of proactively lifting barriers for students is complex, as our author points out, it is achievable. This book helps us to move forward in our work to create more and more great educations for more and more students. Carol Ann Tomlinson continues to champion success for children, and her book is an important read for all educators.

This text is very clear simple and profound. If you are an educator it should convict you and cause you to reconsider how our way of teaching on way to many leaves many behind. If you are a parent it should convict you to accept where your child is and end the competition for grades-your approval-and fear of failure.

About to go into my 5th year of teaching high school English. I want to expand my abilities when it comes to differentiation and this book has already helped me with planning for the coming school year. This book holds a positive can-do tone, which I appreciate greatly.

The book arrived in the describe condition

Very in touch with educators real struggles!

Great information and strategies.

As a person who is switching careers, this text was very helpful in explaining differentiation in the classroom.

Harvard professor and best-selling author (“The Innovators Dilemma,” “The Innovators Prescription,” “Disrupting Class,” and more), Clayton Christensen observed that many of his classmates, despite many accomplishments, were clearly unhappy with their lives. Divorce and the deterioration of many personal relationships were symptoms of something that had seriously gone awry with their lives. With this as a backdrop, Christensen began to challenge his graduating students with three simple questions to examine, measure, and improve their lives after Harvard:1. How can I be sure that I will be successful and happy in my career?2. How can I be sure that my relationships with my spouse, my children and my extended family and close friends become an enduring source of happiness?3. How can I be sure that I live a life of integrity – and stay out of jail? (Enron’s Jeff Skilling was in Christensen’s class at Harvard.)“How Will You Measure Your Life?” emerged from this encounter with students. In it, Christensen asks the critical questions and provides a guide about how to think about life, one based on a deep understanding of human endeavor – what causes what to happen, and why. This he believes will help us with decisions we make every day in our lives – decisions that will help us avoid bad outcomes, unhappiness, and regret.Christensen uses business case studies throughout the book. He draws from these to provide a philosophy for life that offers real success. The starting point is a discussion of priorities - finding happiness in your career, finding happiness in your relationships and staying out of jail - so we can avoid the trap of giving-in to the inner voice that screams the loudest. Christensen’s wants to help you wake up every morning thinking how lucky you are to be doing what you’re doing.“How Will You Measure Your Life/” will help you build a strategy to do exactly that.On career happiness, Christensen warns that compromising on the wrong career path (for fame, money, power) is a cancer that will metastasize over time. What matters most is making sure our jobs are aligned with what really makes us happy. Motivation is much less about external prodding or incentives and much more about what’s inside of you and whether the work is challenging, provides for personal growth, responsibility, recognition, and sense that you are making a meaningful contribution.Money is not the root cause of unhappiness but becomes a problem when it supersedes everything else. (One friend of mine commented that when he left Wall Street as a well-known healthcare stock analyst to an executive role in a major healthcare firm that he was surprised to find that people really at this firm were not motivated by income but rather, were focused on reducing mortality and improving lives. The only thing he said that mattered on Wall Street was how much money you made!)“Before you take that job:• Carefully list the things that others are going to need to do or deliver in order for you to successfully achieve what you hope to do for yourself.• What assumptions have to prove true for you to be happy in the choice you are contemplating?• Are you basing your position on extrinsic or intrinsic motivators?• Why do you think this is going to be something you enjoy doing?• Think about the most important assumptions that have to prove true? How can you swiftly and inexpensively test if they are valid. What evidence do you have?”On personal relationships, Christensen notes from his observations and personal experience that the relationships you have with family and close friends are going to be the most important sources of happiness in your life. “You have to be careful. When it seems like everything at home is going well, you will be lulled into believing that you can put your investments in these relationships onto the back burner. That would be an enormous mistake. By the time serious problems arise in those relationships, it is often too late to repair them. The paradox is that the time when it is most important to invest in building strong families and close friendships is when it appears, at the surface, as if it is not necessary.”He warns that a common mistake made by both men and women is to believe we can invest in life sequentially. I have seen this many times…career is first, marriage is second, and children are relegated to third. The problem is made worse today with so many two income families. While each relationship needs to be routinely nourished and refreshed, we end up putting relationships on the back-burner because we are busy and preoccupied with less important things of life. We end up neglecting the people we care most about in the world. Without focus, we lose out on those rich and deep personal relationships that are the essence of life.To succeed with relationships, Christensen asks us to think about the job we were “hired” to do – as a spouse, as a parent, as a friend. “The path to happiness (in relationships) is about finding someone who you want to make happy, someone who’s happiness is worth devoting yourself to…I have observed that what cements that commitment is the extent to which I sacrifice myself to help her succeed and for her to be happy. Sacrifice deepens our commitment. It applies to all of our relationships.”Christensen notes that our role as parents is to prepare our children for the future. The tragedy of today’s culture is that we are outsourcing parenting to other relatives, nannies, schools, and extracurricular activities. We have lost sight of the importance of our time - the greatest gift we can give another person. Investing our time in another is a sign of respect and love. It provides a clear signal to others as to what is most important in your life.Creating a healthy family culture is hard work and requires an investment of self and time. Marriages are the merging of two cultures. Each family should choose a culture that’s right for them. This entails choosing activities to pursue, and outcomes to achieve. With time, family members will be on auto-pilot thinking “this is how we do it.” Culture development cannot be outsourced. It is doing things together – working in the yard, fixing the house, camping, homework, family sporting events, table games, cooking, etc. – to show our children how to love work, how to solve problems, how to prioritize and what really matters. Culture happens whether you want it to or not. The only question is how much you will influence it.On staying out of jail, Christensen warns against marginal thinking. It applies to choosing right and wrong. We are presented with moral challenges throughout life. When we think about doing something “just this one time” because the marginal cost appears to be negligible, we get suckered in. We don’t see where that path will ultimately take us nor do we appreciate the full cost of the choice. It could be one of many things – misrepresenting expenses or revenues, stuffing a distribution channel, insider trading, a small bribe to gain business, the use of drugs. The landscape is littered with people who never gave a thought to crossing the line “just this once,” thinking they would never get caught.Doing the right thing 100% of the time is easier than 98% of the time. If we break our own rules just once, we can justify the small choices again. Using marginal cost thinking to justify all the small decisions lead up to a big one. Then, the big one does not seem enormous anymore; it is just another incremental step. The only way to avoid the consequences of uncomfortable moral concessions in your life is to never start making them in the first place. When the first step down that path presents itself, turn around and walk the other way.”“The danger for high-achieving people is that they will unconsciously allocate the resources to activities that yield the most immediate, tangible accomplishments. They become accustomed to allocating fewer and fewer resources to the things they would say matter most. They are investing in lives of hallow unhappiness.”To avoid the pitfalls of creating hollow unhappiness, it is imperative that we define our purpose. The three parts of purpose are: establishing a direction (career, relationships, and staying out of jail) with milestones to mark our progress; making a deep, unwavering commitment to achieving the milestones; and using metrics to mark progress. The world will not deliver a cogent and rewarding purpose to you. What is the type of person you want to become? What is the purpose of your life? Is that important to you?Is it something you want to leave to chance?"How Will You Measure Your Life?"

If you feel you've lost your wayHow will you measure your life? How to reach fulfillment. While there is no one shoe fits all answer for everyone, there are various insights within these pages that a multitude can benefit from. Though humans are unique in their own special way, we share similar experiences. The author has used his life and the lives of others as a base point, gathering lessons in the hope that they will benefit you on your life's journey: providing you with the knowledge to live and have the best possible life ever._The book starts off with helping readers to understand what's important in our lives and how we should prioritize our actions, thoughts and resources to that purpose rather than aimlessly and passively floating along. How can we Achieve our goals or contribute to our happiness without implementing ourselves to that cause? We must act on what makes us tick, no ones going to give it to us.-It continues to speak on fulfillment in careers, families, and happiness in relationships.

I loved reading this book so much, bought it for my coworker. Definitely a book you will need to reference for career, marriage, relationships, and life in general to to teach you theories so you know how to measure your happiness so you don’t make mistakes & settle in life.I love the personal stories the author shared with his own life and what he learned to help many of us so we can prove these theories before accepting a new job offer or settling for the wrong relationship. Wish this professor taught this in my school years ago, but at least I learned now.

Professor Clayton Christensen is my favorite business writer. He take business and high sounding economic terms and dissect them to the practical understanding of the layman. Following in the paths of his other best selling and highly elucidating books on innovation and other subjects, this book is to say the least, not disappointing at all.Even though life is not all about business, he (and the co-authors) has severally used simplified and yet highly practical language to propose what should and ought to be the most important measure and approaches to life in general. A highly enlightening book, readers will not be disappointed.Among other topics, the authors explained how readers can use what they called the deliberate (or planned) and emergent strategy to discover what their life's purpose, goal, pursuits and what might eventually work for them in life. The likelihood of the success of any of these strategies been tested along the way with the statement, “What has to prove true for this to work? ”Going further, according to them, people in all cadres of life can use the theory of full costs and marginal costs in taking decisions that have overreaching long or short term repercussions in business and in situations that call for moral choices. They explained that, "The marginal cost of doing something “just this once” always seems to be negligible, but the full cost will typically be much higher. Yet unconsciously, we will naturally employ the marginal cost doctrine in our personal lives. A Voice in our head says, “Look, I know that as a general rule, most people shouldn’t do this. But in this particular extenuating circumstance, just this once, it’s okay.” And the voice in our head seems to be right; the price of doing something wrong “just this once” usually appears alluringly low. It suckers you in, and you don’t see where that path is ultimately headed or the full cost that the choice entails."This book did not set out to just simply teach us morals. But, in our world and times where people see morals as relative, I find the authors' emphasis in this area towards the end of the book a highly reassuring guide.Among other things, my take home from this book is:Never lower your morals in other to please others or meet their expectations. Do not debase yourself or go contrary to what you know to be your true inner convictions and what is the right thing to do. Why? This is because, according to the authors, it is easier to stay true to your convictions 100% of the time than it is to stay true to them 98% of the time. Why is this so? This is because, you never can tell where or how far you will go down the drain after that first, initial, "Just this one time only" act of compromise.--------------------------------------------------------All quotations & brief excerpts are from: Clayton M. Muslims and the Making of America

Review

…Hussain has set out to prove that, far from being merely compatible with American values, Muslims have been at the center of the creation of American popular culture. (James L. Fredericks Commonweal) Muslims and the Making of America is an extremely accessible book and one that should be required reading for Christian communities across the country. It’s a well-researched work with a bibliography that points to sources for further reading. (J. Ryan Parker Patheos)An extraordinary and much needed historical study and an impressive example of impeccable scholarship… (The Midwest Book Review)The writing is conversational, blending personal narrative and historical details, and the examples given are relatable ones. This is a useful and good choice for those who want to show that Muslims (and Islam) are part-and-parcel of American life. (Muhammed Hassanali Booklist)Accessible, engaging, and even entertaining (Choice)A welcome antidote to anti-Muslim sentiment and 'us/them' diatribes (Publishers Weekly)It makes sense that a veteran academic in Islamic studies would engage in this genial and warm conversation. Hussain’s prose is personable, gentle, and melodious yet passionately dedicated to a dream of a complexly inclusive United States…It is a timely, contemporary exercise in bridge building. (Shabana Mir Los Angeles Review of Books)In recent times of rising Islamophobia, rampant misinformation about Islam, and political rhetoric against Muslims, books showcasing the positive aspects of Muslims in America are very welcome. Hussain’s book Muslims and the Making of America may be a very short read but it is a much needed one, packed with facts that destroy myths and remove stereotypes. Review

Muslims and the Making of America is an accessible and engaging book that tells the story of Muslim contributions to American history and creativity. From early medieval intimations of an ‘unknown land’ across the Atlantic, through west African plantation slaves, to the contemporary accomplishments of athletes, musicians, and artists, Islam has been a force in the United States and Muslims have played a vital role in making America great. (Jane McAuliffe, Director of National and International Outreach, United States Library of Congress)Informing the world about Islam’s place in America, this book could not come at a more opportune moment. Lucid, erudite and provocative, only Amir Hussain can make us see the multiple dimensions of the world’s second largest faith in America’s cultural icons, musical stars, political history, cultural values, and public life at large in his unique masterful style. A must-read for anyone wishing to observe Islam beyond sensational headlines in order to grasp the complex lives of Muslim Americans. (Ebrahim Moosa, Professor of Islamic Studies and Religion, University of Notre Dame)A sparkling text. Amir Hussain arrives early to tell a story that has long needed telling. Professor Hussain, immediate past Editor of the Journal of the American Academy of Religion, has written another important book. With “Muslims in the Making of America” he knocks the ball out of the stadium. Book clubs, American Studies courses, and readers of all ages can explore, learn from and have spirited talks about this book. If you want to learn about the (for their overall numbers) disproportionate contributions of Muslims to American history, to our professions and culture, as well as enjoy a good dose of interesting information about sports, music and American architecture, this is your read. There’s one surprise after another in this writer’s strong, clear narrative. My hat’s off also to Hussain and Baylor U Press for the attractive layout, the expansive and elucidating photography, and the pleasant print. Recently National Public Radio and the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation have interviewed Hussain. You can Google them for an introduction to this lively, prescient and intelligent writer.

This book is extremely informative and interesting. All Americans should read this book.

Excellent!

I am interested in this topic. However the writing is rather dry and boring.

Amir Hussain's book couldn’t have been published at a more important time in American History. He writes with a wonderful engaging voice and "Muslims and the Making of America" should be mandatory reading in every public school, college, and prominently displayed in every American library and bookstore. It's that important. I loved the cultural references, and American icons, and Mr. Hussain's personal connection to them. The contemporary feel he brings to the subject matter makes it an accessible read for young and old readers alike.

I heartily concur with Mr. Lansing's review of Dr. Hussain's most recent book. MUSLIMS AND THE MAKING OF AMERICA is an important work that explores many of the significant contributions Muslims have made to the U.S. and continue to make, to the betterment of all. Written in an engaging style, Dr. Hussain's book will open many eyes, inform many minds, and move many hearts.

“Muslims have helped us to be more American, to be better Americans,” writes Loyola Marymount University theology professor Amir Hussain in his new book Muslims and the Making of America. Yet his volume offers little support for this multicultural, politically correct thesis.“There has never been an America without Muslims,” Hussain states while noting Muslims among America’s African slaves both before and after the United States’ founding. Historians estimate their numbers at between ten and 20 percent of all slaves brought in bondage to America. He analyzes the subsequent “impact of Islamic practices on African American worship and music,” although, as other studies have noted, slave-master repression ultimately extinguished Islamic belief among American slaves.Similarly examining the American founding, Hussain also concludes that Founding Father Thomas Jefferson’s “owning a copy of the Qur’an and reading it is crucial to my argument that Islam is part of the history of America.” He “began learning Arabic in the 1770s, after he purchased a translation of the Qur’an in 1765,” namely the 1734 English translation of the Quranic Arabic by English Orientalist George Sale. “It was this Qur’an that Keith Ellison used when he was sworn in as the first Muslim member of Congress in 2007,” Hussain enthuses.“To be clear, Jefferson was no fan of Islam,” Hussain writes, and Sale’s Quran offers reasons why. Sale’s introductory essay describes Islam as “so manifest a forgery” that has motivated “calamities brought on so many nations by the conquests of the Arabians.” Hussain also notes President Jefferson’s campaigns against North Africa’s Muslim Barbary pirates; thus the “founding of the modern American Navy is connected to the Muslim world.”The worlds of entertainment and sports loom large in Hussain’s assessment of Islam in America. Therefore he dedicates his book to Ahmet Ertegun “and to Muhammad Ali, perhaps the two American Muslims with the greatest global influence.” While Ali dominated the boxing ring, Ertegun was “president and cofounder of Atlantic Records and the chairman of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, a man who shaped the music of the twentieth century.”A strange Muslim role model, Ertegun’s biographies say almost nothing about piety, but note his elite background as a diplomat’s son who came to America when his father was Turkey’s ambassador. Using a truly broad definition of “Muslim,” Hussain concedes that Ertegun “wasn’t a ‘good’ Muslim. He lived the high life, was a bon vivant, drank, partied to excess, and had numerous affairs.” Ertegun himself noted in a 2005 interview that he “used to drink a bottle of vodka a day, every day, for about 40 years.”Meanwhile, Hussain unconvincingly concludes that “Muhammad Ali’s life gave the lie to the ‘problem’” that “Islam is…comprised of adherents who are violent, ‘un-American,’ and a threat to our nation.” Hussain quotes Ali, who began his Muslim spiritual journey as a member of the rabidly anti-Semitic Nation of Islam (NOI) in 1964, refusing in 1967 military service during the Vietnam War. “We don’t take part in Christian wars or wars of any unbelievers,” Ali stated, subordinating moral questions of patriotic duty and just war to pure Islamic sectarianism.Although Ali moderated later in life as he moved away from the NOI towards more mainstream Islamic practice, he had a particularly conflicted relationship with Jews. His 1969 statement to television interviewer David Frost that “all Jews and gentiles are devils” foreshadowed a series of anti-Semitic/anti-Israel statements. By contrast, Ali developed friendships with Jews such as comedian Billy Crystal and sportscaster Howard Cosell, and attended the 2012 bar mitzvah of a grandson born to Ali’s daughter and her Jewish husband.Hussain also profiles American professional basketball player Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf, who reflected Ali’s less than all-American behavior. Abdul-Rauf received a playing suspension in 1996 after he refused to stand before games for the national anthem. In a 2016 interview, he stated that as a “Muslim, I don’t believe in giving my allegiance to anyone or anything but God,” and that the American “flag represents…tyranny and oppression.”The NOI and its bizarre offshoot cult, the Five Percenters, present more radicalism, yet Hussain’s analysis of their influence upon American rappers such as Ice Cube shows little concern. His past praise for the NOI exhibited an antisemitism often present in hip-hop music but ignored by Hussain. He likewise ignores Ice Cube’s lax understanding of Islam; Ice Cube stated in a 2000 interview that “going to the mosque, the ritual and the tradition, it’s just not in me to do. So I don’t do it.”More appealing is Hussain’s description of the “Muslim engineer from Bangladesh, Fazlur Rahman Khan,” who “helped to redefine the American skyline” with design innovations that helped build the World Trade Center. “It was foreign Muslims, nineteen hijackers, who took down those buildings. But it was an American Muslim, Fazlur Rahman Khan, who made those magnificent buildings possible in the first place.” Yet as in the case of Ertegun, little Islamic faith appears in the biography of Khan, who married an Austrian non-Muslim. According to his daughter, he enjoyed “traveling and meeting people of different cultures and different backgrounds, listening to music, reading widely, from existentialism to writings about beauty, and learning about art.”Hussain’s book ultimately reveals more about how America made various individuals from Muslim backgrounds rather than how Hussain’s Muslims, who often have Madonna’s depth of piety, made America. The radicalism displayed by various Muslims profiled by Hussain affirms his observation that “Islam often was an alternative to ‘White’ or ‘Western’ in African American movements.” Alienated by American racism, these movements often sought false redemption in Islam from historic sins like slavery. In contrast, the Egyptian-American Ahmed Zewail, whom Hussain praises for winning a Nobel Prize in chemistry, valued America’s merits in a 2009 interview. “What America has given me is a system of appreciation and opportunity, and that is what we are lacking in the Muslim world. If I had stayed in Egypt, I would not have been able to do what I have done.”this is a review from robert spence of ihad watch
