This small book is truly a gem. I learned about making wine, but much more than that, learned about patience, about the discovery of our natural world, and about being with and working closely with others, all of which are essential to growing a vineyard and then making wine. Each chapter gave me plenty to think about and a deeper appreciation for the natural world, for relationships with family and friends and for, well, "the meaning of life." Like a good glass of wine, I wanted to savor this book, and was sorry to have it come to an end.
This book is phenomenal- one that is re-readable for its poetic content, and deeper philosophical explorations of what it is to tend a vineyard. The technical information on the process of wine making and growing grapes is unique! Its a fun and easy read, packed with tons of valuable gems of info , beautiful poetry, and deep soulful thought provoking words. For all who enjoy reading, not only for those interested in grapes and wine. This is one of the best books I've ever read, and already re-reading it with my husband.
The book was very interesting as to how the author developed his vineyard. He interspersed interesting aspects of life, poetry, and thoughts on various aspects of life in to the process of growing grapes and making wine.
Good read on the experience of starting and cultivating a vineyard in Connecticut. Not the most hospitable spot. Lots of insight on learning and adapting over time.
John is a friend. His interests and endless energy always amazes me. When he told me that he'd written a book about wine making, I was only mildly interested since I'm a non-drinker. However, I found in reading his book much more than simply the art of making wine. There is an abundance of humor, poetry, philosophy, geography, horticulture, history and much more in this book. I highly recommend this book to all wine connoisseurs as well as non-drinkers(such as myself)
