“The Performance of Becoming Human” by Daniel Borzutzky won the 2016 National Book Award for poetry. Last year was a highly politicized year, and it’s no surprise that this award went to a collection that’s also highly politicized.Borzutzky covers it all.Refugees and immigrants. The environment. Third World sweatshops. (Do you know the people who made your t-shirt? Do you have a relationship with them? Borzutzky asks). Torture. Illegal aliens. Unsafe working conditions. Wastewater treatment plants. Malnourished children. Police issues. The production of garbage. Violence. The style is simple and plain, leading to a more devastating critique, a more devastating impact. As you read this generally long poems (the collections contains a total of 18 poems), you discover you have entered a dystopic world, or perhaps you’ve been living there all along, and these poems are forcing you to confront that reality. Here is one of the shorter poems in the collection, and at first it seems almost a break in the political narrative.Dream Song #17They took my body to the forestThey asked me to climb a ladderI did not want to climb a ladderBut the forced me to climb the ladderIf you don’t climb the ladderwe will bury you in the mudI had to decide should I dieby hanging or by burialI climbed the ladder and they wrappeda belt around the thick limb of a treeAnd when I could no longer breathethey tossed me into a streamAnd I floated to the edge of the villagewhere someone prayed for my soulIt’s like this in a lullabyfor the end of the world:The options for the endare endlessBut this is not really a lullabyfor the end of the worldIt’s about the beginningwhat happens when we start to rotin the daylightThe way the light shines onthe ants and worms and parasitesloving our bodiesIt’s about the swarms of dogsgnawing our skin and bonesDo you know what it’s likewhen a ghost licks your intestinesTo avoid the holethe children must sing sweetly, softlyTo avoid the holethey must fill their songs with loveWhen you consider the poem in its context in the collection, it assumes another kind of meaning. It follows a poem about Third World sweatshops, and it precedes a poem about torture and violence. And you realize that it is describing what happens to dissenters and especially in dictatorships (the poems include references to both Argentina’s Dirty War against the left wing from 1974 to 1983 and what happened in Chile with the fall of the Salvador Allende regime in 1973 (Borzutzky’s parents are from Chile).Borzutzky has published a collection of stories, “Arbitrary Tales” (2005); three collections of poetry, including “The Ecstasy of Capitulation” (2007), “The Book of Interfering Bodies” (2011), and “The Performance of Becoming Human;” and four poetry chapbooks: “Failure in the Imagination” (2007); “In the Murmurs of the Rotten Carcass Economy” (2015); “Data Bodies” (2013); and “Bedtime Stories for the End of the World” (2015). He has translated several works by Chilean authors, including poet Jaime Luis Huenon and the fiction writer Juan Emas. He’s a professor at Wright College in Chicago.“The Performance of Being Human” asks questions without question marks, questions about politics, about social issues, and about our humanity, what it means and what it can become, or has become.

Daniel Borzutsky's poetry here is breathless, dystopian, and largely stream of consciousness. Borzutsky's Chilean-Jewish background informs some of the poems which make narrative illusions and historical illusions rich in that history. His third volume of poetry, this particular choice for the National Book Award is interesting in that it deeply political, but almost feels like its from another time and aesthetic period than now. Borzutsky's long lines remind one of Whitman, but his blurring and convoluting of events, his dystopian settings, and his dark social commentary run contrary to that particular impulse. The title, an illusion to Kafka's "A Report to an Academy," informs us of the strange and familiar as well as the absurd and poignant or the gruesome and touching all cut through the work. It's intense, allusive, and deserves several readings, but that very intensity and primal scream element actually makes several readings somewhat hard. Not for the easily exhausted in either content or form, this is a book of poetry like Pasolini's Salo is a film: returning to it makes it richer, but its intensity makes that return daunting. One major criticism is that the intensity of the style and use of long lines makes poems blur together immediately after reading--this seems like an intended affect, but does make it hard to write about. Some changes in style or form could have made the collection a little less daunting. This poems are hard because life can hard, precarious, biting; and while not without humor, Borzutsky's humor is so dark that it isn't necessarily a relief. I am torn on this volume, but I will reading Borzutsky in the future.

I know Daniel Borzutzky-this book is amazing and it seems to come from someplace deep within him

I love it.....

5 start

A wonderful thought provoking collection of poems that rage against the world as it is today. Every person that reads this book may come to a totally different interpretation but that is the joy of it. To me the book is an indictment of conformity in which people are like slabs of meat. The government is also shot on with Borzutzky's guns blazing brightly. Another theme is displaced people forced to struggle with situations outside their control. A well deserved award winning collection.

It is quite difficult to assign this book with an overarching theme or multiple themes. If I am being honest in my assessment, this book seems to be your average postmodern work that is compiled of a nice blend of communist propaganda, deconstructionist word salads, and moralizing soapbox identity politics. The author seems have a deep resentment for the condition of being and a forthright disgust for human life. I think we should consider our society fortunate that the poet does not have a very large audience, because I believe, this type of person being placed in the right position of power could prove genocidal. Also, after seeing in the back pages that this book was funded by the National Endowment for the Arts, I have reconsidered my position in supporting the program,Communism is responsible for more deaths than Nazism, its not cool or the hip thing to like.Don't support this poet. It is not good for your health. A cancer on poetry,Sincerely,Cyrus Lee Garner(A young poet trying to resurrect poetry from the depths of Marxist Hell)

Hate this book but will force myself to finish it. I find the poems so far to be difficult and too angry

Amazon.com Review

"The best way to understand the dramatic transformation of unknown books into bestsellers, or the rise of teenage smoking, or the phenomena of word of mouth or any number of the other mysterious changes that mark everyday life," writes Malcolm Gladwell, "is to think of them as epidemics. Ideas and products and messages and behaviors spread just like viruses do." Although anyone familiar with the theory of memetics will recognize this concept, Gladwell's The Tipping Point has quite a few interesting twists on the subject. For example, Paul Revere was able to galvanize the forces of resistance so effectively in part because he was what Gladwell calls a "Connector": he knew just about everybody, particularly the revolutionary leaders in each of the towns that he rode through. But Revere "wasn't just the man with the biggest Rolodex in colonial Boston," he was also a "Maven" who gathered extensive information about the British. He knew what was going on and he knew exactly whom to tell. The phenomenon continues to this day--think of how often you've received information in an e-mail message that had been forwarded at least half a dozen times before reaching you. Gladwell develops these and other concepts (such as the "stickiness" of ideas or the effect of population size on information dispersal) through simple, clear explanations and entertainingly illustrative anecdotes, such as comparing the pedagogical methods of Sesame Street and Blue's Clues, or explaining why it would be even easier to play Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon with the actor Rod Steiger. Although some readers may find the transitional passages between chapters hold their hands a little too tightly, and Gladwell's closing invocation of the possibilities of social engineering sketchy, even chilling, The Tipping Point is one of the most effective books on science for a general audience in ages. It seems inevitable that "tipping point," like "future shock" or "chaos theory," will soon become one of those ideas that everybody knows--or at least knows by name. --Ron Hogan

From Publishers Weekly

The premise of this facile piece of pop sociology has built-in appeal: little changes can have big effects; when small numbers of people start behaving differently, that behavior can ripple outward until a critical mass or "tipping point" is reached, changing the world. Gladwell's thesis that ideas, products, messages and behaviors "spread just like viruses do" remains a metaphor as he follows the growth of "word-of-mouth epidemics" triggered with the help of three pivotal types. These are Connectors, sociable personalities who bring people together; Mavens, who like to pass along knowledge; and Salesmen, adept at persuading the unenlightened. (Paul Revere, for example, was a Maven and a Connector). Gladwell's applications of his "tipping point" concept to current phenomena--such as the drop in violent crime in New York, the rebirth of Hush Puppies suede shoes as a suburban mall favorite, teenage suicide patterns and the efficiency of small work units--may arouse controversy. For example, many parents may be alarmed at his advice on drugs: since teenagers' experimentation with drugs, including cocaine, seldom leads to hardcore use, he contends, "We have to stop fighting this kind of experimentation. We have to accept it and even embrace it." While it offers a smorgasbord of intriguing snippets summarizing research on topics such as conversational patterns, infants' crib talk, judging other people's character, cheating habits in schoolchildren, memory sharing among families or couples, and the dehumanizing effects of prisons, this volume betrays its roots as a series of articles for the New Yorker, where Gladwell is a staff writer: his trendy material feels bloated and insubstantial in book form. I read "blink" and "The Tipping Point" together over the span of a week. Both books were very interesting and touched on similar insights into human behavior and psychology. "The Tipping Point" was similar in style to "blink" in that it presented a small handful of themes over and over to prove the premise the author initially laid out at the beginning of the book. Which is, of course, very convenient for the author. Gladwell essentially has a theory for why cool fads and trends catch on, and in writing this book he appears to have scoured a mixed bag of scientific and non-scientific psychological studies and historical observations to support his theory. The problem with this method is that its not the best way to prove the validity of a theory. One of the most excruciating passages in the book is when Gladwell tries to argue that former ABC news anchor Peter Jennings successfully swayed voters with his facial expressions in the early 1980's. A study apparently suggested that Jennings made favorable facial expressions while introducing stories about Regan but had a neutral face when introducing stories about Walter Mondale, and this caused viewers to change their voting habits. The author seriously tries to make his case solely on the fact that post-election ABC viewers were more likely to say that they voted for Regan than Mondale. It never even occurs to the author (even for a fleeting moment) that maybe ABC news viewers were/are more conservative as a group and thus predisposed to vote for a conservative candidate anyway. The sentence "Because serial killers drink milk, milk drinking must cause people to become serial killers" is a classic example of a Gladwell "proof."Taken as a whole, this book is a bit scary because its a likable best seller, but its unfortunately a sort of misguided Fox News or USA Today version of what could be a very interesting discussion. I hope more books will be written in this area, because it truly is a realm that needs more analysis.

Some may say “The Tipping Point” belabors the obvious, which is that things change, sometimes overnight. True, too true, but so what? Malcolm Gladwell, the master of popularized social research, makes us care about the mechanisms of seemingly abrupt shifts in the course of human events—such as why William Dawes’ midnight ride to warn that the British were coming didn’t start the American Revolution, but Paul Revere’s did. Turns out Revere’s personality helped his news galvanize patriots to pick up their rifles, while Dawes’ identical cry made people turn over and go back to sleep. Revere had two of the three traits Gladwell identifies as necessary to the spread of social trends: he was a Connector and a Maven. Revere had a vast rolodex of acquaintances in colonial Massachusetts and he knew everything there was to know about the nascent independence movement. He set the scene for resistance to the onmarching British, and a few local men of Gladwell’s third type, the Persuaders, finished the job of rallying the militias of Concord and Lexington. Gladwell is adept at explaining the academic research that led to such popular ideas as “six degrees of separation” and relating such social science experimentation to his overall theme of how change happens. He goes deeply into the discoveries about learning that led to the success of “Sesame Street” and “Blue’s Clues”—these shows’ producers used the idea of “stickiness” to instill basic principles and values in pre-schoolers. The “broken windows” theory of policing gets a thorough explainer, including a side trip into how do-gooding seminarians can allow themselves to avoid being good Samaritans. Advertising is one of the great accelerators of trends, and Gladwell marshals a few Madison Ave. case studies to show how commercials tip us into parting with our hard-earned cash. Absolutely painless learning is what Gladwell offers, with a side benefit of greater self-awareness.

As Usual, Malcolm Gladwell is a great story teller. The book is about the small things that can make huge changes. The book is interesting and fun to read, but there are two big problems:a) Malcolm Gladwell is not a scientist, and he lacks the skepticism which is so mauch an important part of science. He starts with the story of the crime fall in NY that came shortly after the start of the "broken windows" policy. The "fact" that the "broken windows"policy made such a huge change serves him well for his arguments, but there is a problem here. the claim that the "broken windows" policy was the main factor in reducing the crime at that time in NY, is an assumption, and by now we have strong reasons to believe that it played only a mior role in the crime reduction. Other factors such as reduction of lead in fuel have much stronger correlation with the crime reduction, and in many other places, as well, while efforts to replicate the "broken windows" policy elsewhere did not produce the same results. So his first chapter is about a nice but false story that if it was true, was showing an interesting nature of how vast changes in behavior happen. The second problem, is that the book was written before that Internet became a major player in the field. By now it is problably the most major player, but the book describes how things were before the Internet became a major player. In this sense, the book describes how things were in another era. Things have completely changed since then.

This is a good puppet book and we really like it. It's not as good as some of the other ones though. For one, the duck has something weird under it that does not resemble a body or feet in a number of the pictures (confuses my kid....and me). For 2, the duck's head is smaller than some of the other board books so not as interactive with the toddler. Great book besides that though.

My 8 months old loves this book. He loves the duck and he listens carefully when i am reading to him. Also you can play and create your own stories with the duck. :) however, the book is so tiny! It is the size of my palm. It is a very nice book that has a great idea of a puppet duck but I was surprised to see that it was so small.

I was very disappointed in this book. As you go through the pages the Duck head grows lengthwise and resembles maybe a snake or worm? The story is thoughtless and doesnt match the illustrations.

My baby loves this book! Maybe it is the duck, I don't know, but he gets really excited when we reach this part of his play. He has other books he reads too, but this is probably his favorite (besides 7 ducklings). A lot of fun for a creative parent who can make a whole story out of this little guy. Definite must have in my book! (considering buying the others, but I think 1 should be enough for him to get the idea, maybe when he is a bit older we can order the others because right now it is a new story every time we pick it up!) I like the fact that parents can make up longer stories and interact with the infant stage.

Not much of a story here to read but the little duck is a big hit. Lots of laughter. Grandson likes it too. :-)

We love these little books with the puppets in them! They are so cute and colorful-- really hold up well too. Lots of giggles and kisses when we read them! We'll be getting more!

My 2 year old loves these puppet books, he has 5 different ones and they're all super cute.

She loves to see the duck's face wiggle and she gives the face a little kiss every time we turn the page. At 18 months, her fingers are just about long enough to wiggle the face herself.
