My boy can't get enough of these magic school bus books. They are cleverly written with layers of detail, allowing you to make it a long read or a quicker read. I couldn't ask for a better way to make him look forward to kindergarten (although he will be disappointed when they don't have magical adventures!) And as a PhD scientist and former science teacher, I have not yet found an error in a dozen books. For the sticklers, they even debunk the pretend parts of the story at the end. This electricity one is great, and the senses one is superb (but long). My only quibble is that with the paperbacks, the pages soon fall right out. But they're good enough to tape em all back up!

If you have a kid who's into electricity, this is a great book. My son just turned 4 and LOVES this book. I omit some of the portions (like the detailed explanation of an electromagnet), but we'll get there as he gets older. Just as a side note, if your child is really into electricity, also get the book "Wired," which explains electricity in a different way. The two books have little overlap and complement each other well. I got Wired for my son when he'd just turned 3 and, despite the high-tech nature of it, he was enthralled for the 20 minutes it took to read it!

I got this book because my kids had questions about electricity that I didn't know the answers to. This book is captivating for my 4 year old, intriguing to my 6 year old, and a learning experience for mom! It's written like the show, they know all the characters and love the mini lessons that put together the bigger picture about what electricity is.

I love how well magic school bus books explain things! My five year old is obsessed with electricity and this book is a new favorite!

My five year old daughter and I love all these Magic School Bus books. I am a research scientist and my daughter spends a lot of time with me while I work. She loves learning new things from these books and gets a special kick out of it when I learn something new along with her. I highly recommend these books to anyone with small children.

My son started reading this series at school, he was so interested i've kept buying the next book and he loves reading them. Great book series!

Last year I introduced my grandson to The Magic School Bus series and he's enjoyed every single book. However, this is his very favorite. It has sparked his curiosity and he and his electrical engineer grandfather have had long discussions ranging from amps to Ohms. We followed up with a snap-together circuit set for Christmas and he loved that, too. The Magic School Bus books make science and exploration fun.

works well to teach young boys & girls about electricity

What People Wore When: A Complete Illustrated History of Costume from Ancient Times to the Nineteenth Century for Every Level of Society, by Melissa Leventon

From School Library Journal

Adult/High School—This attractive book will appeal to teens looking for quick answers for a last-minute assignment, and it will also be of interest to budding fashionistas and social historians. Leventon has combined current research on costume and dress through the ages with the detailed beauty of the work of two 19th-century illustrators, Auguste Racinet and Friedrich Hottenroth, to provide a historical and thematic examination of fashion and dress that is both comprehensive and readable. The volume works first and foremost as a reference book, and it is full of informative sidebars and copious cross-references. But it is worth browsing through because it is also full of gorgeous color pictures as well as silhouettes that show the changing shape of clothing and style through time. There is a lot of attention to detail, both visually and textually. The result is an exhaustive, entertaining tome that will be put to good use in reference departments and circulating collections alike.—Caitlin Fralick, Ottawa Public Library, ON Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. From Booklist

What People Wore When combines the studies of two classic nineteenth-century illustrators, Auguste Racinet and Friedrich Hottenroth. According to the book’s introduction, their work is presented first by era and then by subject, so that illustrators, historians, and students can choose to follow the path of fashion through the centuries or study in detail the contrasting styles of individual clothing and accessories. However, because the various drawings and illustrations are not attributed, the volume misses the chance to compare the works of these two famous costume historians. In the first section of the book, “The Grammar of Costume,” drawings portray the changing trends of fashion worldwide from ancient times to the mid–nineteenth century. The second part, “The Elements of Costume,” surveys types of clothing and accessories, for example, “Women’s Dress, 1300–1600” and “Regional Headwear.” In both sections, cross-references and navigation bars draw attention to recurring motifs. A glossary defines most, but not all, of the terms that are italicized in the text, which was written by leading experts in the field of costume history. Detailed annotations of the drawings and illustrations, along with the glossary and index, provide an interesting study of the vocabulary of style through the ages. A couple of other books that do a good job of covering this broad span of the history of costume include Douglas W. Gorsline’s What People Wore: A Visual History from Ancient Times to Twentieth-Century America (1952) and Bronwyn Cosgrave’s The Complete History of Costume & Fashion: From Egypt to the Present Day (2000). This book is recommended for most libraries and will be a welcome addition to the holdings of public, school, and academic libraries. --Diana Shonrock

Although not every article of clothing is described in every picture, the descriptions provided are an excellent reference point. The detailed descriptions cover headgear, hairstyles, accessories, and footwear. Would recommend this over "Pictorial Encyclopedia of Historic Costume" and "The Historical Encyclopedia of Costumes."

I purchased this book to use as a reference for making historical costumes for doll figures, and it is well worth the price I paid. The book follows a simple chronological progression of years with every two pages showing a new series of beautiful illustrations in color depicting either men's or women's clothing from the time period being discussed. The historical descriptions are concise, and each illustration is labeled with regional terms and titles that can easily be looked up on the internet or in other reference books if more research is needed. Everyday clothes, costumes, or regalia from Europe, Africa, the Far East, the Middle East, and North America are well represented. The only thing missing from this book is the native and national dress of Central and South America, and Australia and New Zealand areas. In spite of this lack, this is the best book on clothing and costuming I have ever used.

This was a very fascinating book. If you are interested in costuming before the 19th century, this book gives detailed information about clothes, hair, and accessories of Americans, Europeans, etc It even shows how the people wore each layer which would be helpful. Unfortunately for me, though, I was looking for 1800's, which is the 19th Century, so the book cut off right before the era I was looking for. That was my error. I'm sure if it continued through the 19th Century, it would have been what I was looking for.

All of the pages have color illustrations, great descriptions and the way it is written makes it easy to read, even to those with no previous fashion background. It is organized by year and geographic areas. It does lack a bit of the cultural background behind the development in each style/fashion. Great book overall and it is even used as a text book for Fashion History classes, including in Art Institute. Mostly basics.

Not only does it have great renderings and references. It has historical background as to what the trends were at any given period. Hair, shoes, accessories and fabric trends are all included with each time period. A great addition for the costume designer and builder to assist with period accuracy.

I haven't finished this book yet but I have read so far it is really, anyone who is into fashion or costume design should definitely read this book. Only thing I wish that this book had is the under garments, you have to buy a completely different book if you want to learn about the under garments.

I like to use this as a reference when I sew costumes. I like visual aids.

Granddaughter loves the book.

Visiting my cousin, bought a few things I thought she needed, but she asked me to get her just one.... A Baltimore Catechism because she said the modern one she had was too confusing and difficult to understand. Now, she loves this book so much, she even reads it in the morning before taking her shower, telling me she needs her shot of Catechism to get her going each day! I told this to my Mom and when she came over for a visit, she asked to see it. Then, she couldn't put it down, saying how this was so easy to understand and the exact same as she was taught in Catholic School way back when. After a bit of thought, she asked if any of my children might want one, too, and she bought one for my son. He just emailed me to say "Thank you!" Yeah, it has a few typo errors, but insignificant compared with the goodly truths it contains. I'd say it's a great tool for those still old fashioned enough to love God and want to save their souls.

The Baltimore Catechism(s) is great, and this edition has 1, 2, and 3 printed in an easy-to-read font. I have no criticisms towards the content. My three stars are given to the quality of the book from this publisher (Forgotten Books). The editing is poorly done. There are typos that stick out rather conspicuously. I wouldn't mention it if they weren't conspicuous. Sentences are cut halfway and entered onto the next line when they could have not been so. The entire series of the Baltimore Catechism and every other book from this publisher (Forgotten Books) is online for free at their website, but the Baltimore Catechism is also available online elsewhere. Considering that the book is for free on their website and free on the internet and very short, I am perplexed as to why the book was so poorly edited. In fact the opening of the book cuts out snippets from Wikipedia to describe what the Baltimore Catechism is and what the Third Council of Baltimore was, which I found rather impersonal and tacky. The final criticism is that there is a laminated layer covering the paperback cover, and that layer is starting to peel after I've had the book for little over a month.I think, in hindsight, it would also be good to have the different Catechisms as separate books, for it makes browsing easier and, I can imagine, although I am not a teacher nor a catechist, teaching easier. In conclusion, although this edition is cheap and essentially fine if one doesn't mind typos, poor formatting, etc., the stickler in me regrets not purchasing from a more reputable publisher, like TAN Books who also offers the fourth Baltimore Catechism written for teachers as a supplement. I will admit that I was taken in by the cover of the book and the price. I do often judge books by their covers. In this case, I was mistaken.

This is a really good book for someone who wants to advance in the knowledge of their faith.

Just what I wanted. Excellent

For those of us educated in Catholic grade schools in the the period before 1970, and for those who think "The Catachism of the Catholic Church" is not a great tool for basics----this is the book to look at and learn from.

Simple, clear, beautiful.

I remember this from my youth. Thank God we have a copy of a Catechism that a normal person can understand. Thank you, Forgotten Books. I have several of your publications. They are wonderful.

The Baltimore Catchecism has been replaced by a much more informative book but this was the book I learned from and it has special meaning to me as well as memories of wise teachers. It is good for anyone who wishes to know a little more about the Catholic Faith.

Review

“Freud: The Making of an Illusion [is] a . . . stake driven into its subject’s cold, cold heart. . . . Crews is an attractively uncluttered stylist, and he has an amazing story to tell.”―Louis Menand, The New Yorker“A powerful and thorough takedown of Sigmund Freud.”―Vulture“Crews [is] going in for the kill. A damning portrait.”―Esquire“Diligently documented . . . neither sensationalized nor ranting . . . a scorching summation.”―The Chronicle of Higher Education“An elegant and relentless exposé . . . Impressively well-researched, powerfully written, and definitively damning. Crews wields his razor-sharp scalpel on Freud’s slavish followers, in particular, who did not want to see or who willfully redacted the sloppiness of Freud’s research methods in order to ‘idealize him.’ ”―Kirkus Reviews (Starred Review)“Crews relentlessly shreds the deceptions that Freudians even now try to maintain. . . . This thorough dismantling of one of modernity’s founding figures is sure to be met with controversy.”―Booklist (Starred Review)“A stunning indictment . . . this fascinating biographical study paints a portrait of Freud as a man who cared more about himself than his patients and more about success than science.”―Publishers Weekly“For those who worship Freud, and even those millions who have simply admired his ideas, Crews’s rigorous and captivating detective work will be a bracing challenge.”―Elizabeth Loftus, co-author of The Myth of Repressed Memory “A riveting, masterful biography . . . Delving deeply into hitherto suppressed archival material, Crews paints an unforgettable portrait of an utterly incompetent psychotherapist whose ruthless pursuit of wealth and fame led him to disregard the welfare of his patients as well as the scruples of scientific method.”―Richard J. McNally, author of What Is Mental Illness?“Frederick Crews tells the riveting story of how a troubled, insecure, but supremely ambitious doctor stumbled from one therapeutic fantasy to another before hitting on the one that made him famous. Crews is a master narrator, and he has put his finger on the key factor in Freud's career: the remarkable series of intense, morally fraught, and truly bizarre relationships (collegial, therapeutic, and sexual)―that kept Freud going as his theories proved ever resistant to confirmation.”―John Farrell, author of Freud’s Paranoid Quest“One has to admire Crews’s story: the way he tells it, and the marvelous blending of the different sources.”―Malcolm Macmillan, author of Freud Evaluated: The Completed Arc“The Freudian myth--one of the thought-deforming tyrannies of the 20th century--is hereby at an end. This book is as exhilarating as the fall of the Berlin wall.”―Stewart Justman, author of The Psychological Mystique“In this painstaking study, Frederick Crews reveals just what a huge intellectual Ponzi scheme the elaborate Freudian business represented.”―Paul McHugh, author of The Mind has Mountains: Reflections on Society and Psychiatry“Making use of newly available correspondence, and new readings of previously available material, Crews reveals a pattern of misunderstanding, misrepresentation, and mendacity that characterized the Freudian enterprise right from the beginning.”―John F. Kihlstrom, editor of Functional Disorders of Memory“This riveting and masterful reassessment puts the final nail in the coffin of Sigmund Freud’s misguided career by meticulously documenting his willful descent into pseudoscience. Altogether a fascinating read!”―Frank J. Sulloway, author of Freud, Biologist of the Mind: Beyond the Psychoanalytic Legend

-- if, that is, you were one of those who respected the Founder and his doctrine for downwards of half a century. A synthesis of 40 years of research on Freud and psychoanalysis by Crews himself and many other scholars, this work is scholarly and well documented, yet anything but dry: it is elegantly and passionately written and a riveting, compulsive read. Essentially a psychobiography (putting to rest the idea that Crews is “anti-psychological”), it shows how psychoanalysis grew solely out of Freud’s own life and dreams and was heavily influenced by his 15-year long substantial use of cocaine to treat his own depressions and set backs, and not out of his clinical observations of patients nor his scientific studies, as he claimed. Is Crews, who has been writing about Freud for 40 years, a mere “Freud basher” with nothing new to say in this book, as many have accused him of being (without reading this book)? No. In the ten years since his last book, Crews has indeed found more telling and occasionally shocking new evidence to buttress his view of Freud. He puts to rest the idea that psychoanalysis is a science—a point that Freud himself insisted on—and offers a great many reasons to see it as a successful pseudoscience and a cult, built not only on Freud’s personality but on misrepresentation amounting to actual fraud on Freud’s part. Armed now with the first three volumes of the recently published unexpurgated edition of Freud’s many letters to his fiancée during time that he developed what he later called psychoanalysis, Crews can cite chapter and verse demonstrating that what the young Sigmund confessed to Martha privately often—shockingly-- contradicted what he claimed to have “found,” “discovered,” or “proved” in his public assertions and writings and to his followers. He shows that Freud did not discover a “dark continent” of “unconscious energies” and “repressed unconscious wishes,” but merely imposed his own, often cocaine inspired, ideas and (mostly) sexual fantasies (cocaine being a well known aphrodisiac that makes a user feel like a “sexual god”) on others. The record shows that he consistently insisted that his patients (mostly women) tell him what he “knew” they “must have” experienced or imagined, sometimes even resorting to tactics such as “head pressure,” full body massage, and other very questionable tactics to induce his patients to “remember” whatever he wanted them to, all very powerful forms of suggestion. And notoriously, what he wanted them to remember changed over time. At first he insisted it was early childhood “seductions” by parents or other relatives (the famous—and misnamed, according to Crews-- “seduction theory) that caused their problems, and later it was “repressed” infantile sexual fantasies on which they had become fixated by means of masturbation. There is no evidence for either idea. The historical facts show that Freud never cured a single documented patient, that his psychological theories of mind and sexuality are pseudo-scientific versions of his own fantasies, or of dressed up antiquated (and anti-woman) ideas such as “hysteria," mixed in with old Christian beliefs about the harmful effects of masturbation, a belief that Freud never abandoned and saw as the source of almost all psychopathology. And there is much, much more. How then did psychoanalysis come to be such a powerful influence both culturally and within psychology and psychiatry in the 20th century, especially in America? Crews details the manner in which Freud created a cult of personality based on his own grandiosity, which enabled him to dismiss any counterexamples to his theories as misbegotten. Like all cult leaders, he seduced his disciples—including his daughter Anna, whom he subjected to a four year analysis-- into believing in him and into unquestioned allegiance to his ideas, buttressed with the threat of excommunication from his “in” group (which was the fate of those who did question his ideas). His followers did not hesitate to show their allegiance to him by misrepresenting, falsifying, manipulating, and sometimes heavily censoring any disconfirming information about his ideas and his treatments, including the negative outcome of not one, but ALL of his patients in his case histories. There were of course other reasons for the appeal of psychoanalysis aside from misrepresentation: Crews suggests that it satisfied the need for a belief system left void by religion at a time when religion was waning. He also suggests that it appealed particularly to men through its confirmation of a patriarchal, derogatory view of women. Moreover, psychoanalysis had a masterful trick up its sleeve that helped its spread: it was able to dismiss all criticism as “unconscious resistance” --a completely un-provable but very effective claim. Also important is Freud’s undoubted power as a writer. Crews validates Freud as a great literary stylist, comparable in originality to James Joyce, and views his case histories, modeled on the Sherlock Holmes stories of Arthur Canon Doyle, as gripping, compelling detective stories. It was not for nothing that Freud was awarded the illustrious Goethe prize in Germany in 1930. Crews predicts the same fate for psychoanalysis as a theory of mind and a therapy that Freud predicted for religion in his “The Future of an Illusion.” In the fields of psychiatry and main-stream psychology, this prediction has already come true, though psychoanalysis as a set of ideas about human motivation still persists in some circles, mainly departments of literature in universities. True, his book’s tone is that of a former believer who has seen the light and is dismayed about having been taken in and wants to save you from the same fate. But that gives the book its lively energy and passion, and the sheer amount of evidence he has here adduced justifies his negative attitude towards Freud and his followers-- even if you don’t agree that psychoanalysis set back the treatment of mental illness science for 70 years. Sure to be controversial, this book is a riveting read!

About 1970 I read a couple Freud’s books at someone’s recommendation. I don’t remember which ones but I remember that I had two responses: A-painfully boring and B-BS. Since then I have had a few conversations with clinical psychologists (never as a client/subject). None were Freudian but struck me as just as nonsensical. Thus I admit my personal bias but within that bias Freud was no better or worse than the rest. Now, somehow, I have stumbled up on this tome. It is the latest in a series of books this author has written expressing disdain for Freud, not just professionally as a person. The authors arguments appear to be well documented but the conclusion may be one sided and unfair to Freud. I just don’t have the background to judge Crews vs other Freud biographers. Nonetheless if Crews is only half correct, Freud was talentless, (child) sex obsessed little creep whose only ability was self promotion.Whether due to irony, comeuppance, hypocrisy, or wry sense of humor the author devotes much of the penultimate chapter to a sort of psychoanalysis of Freud himself. Some of it may be on point but much seems to be a well grounded as freud's own BS. Overall a peculiar chapter

I had read a little about Freud's shortcomings but this was an amazing revelation about the depths of his fraud.

Meticulously researched and very well written. Crews exposes the Freud scam. Freud was not an original thinker but took ideas from others and claimed them as his own. He was a very poor therapist, failed hypnotist, incompetent medical doctor, despised his patients, and eschewed scientific rigor. It seems his "best" ideas originated under the influence of cocaine.Freud was a nasty man who crushed those disciples who disagreed with him and used his own experiences to form his theories all the while pretending he was basing his theories upon case studies. He admitted psychoanalysis cured no one but the money was good as he sought "goldfish" to treat and thereby became rich from his scam.

Paranoia and Contentment: A Personal Essay on Western Thought, by John C. Hampsey

Review

Paranoia and Contentment is a sharply reasoned, humane, surprising, and intellectually bold meditation on paranoicvision. Part scholarship, part personal essay, thisbeautifully written book turns upside-down our standardthinking about paranoia, creativity, imagination, and what it is to be wholly human. (Tim O'Brien, author of The Things They Carried) Paranoia and Contentment is a fascinating exercise in redefining 'paranoia' and coining the term 'paranoidic,' thereby positing new criteria for analyzing our life and society today. (Lawrence Ferlinghetti)An extraordinarily original rumination on the human condition, ranging across a broad field of philosophical thought and Western literature.... Hampsey's goal is to startle us into reconsidering our conventional ways of thinking, and I believe he has achieved that goal admirably.... Eminently readable, often eloquent. (Howard Zinn, Professor Emeritus, Boston University, author of A People's History of the United States)

Great read. It's broken down by genre, so you can easily flip to the period you're most interested in at the time. John Hampsey provides fresh, thought-provoking commentary on classic works. The words come to life on the page as though you were in conversation with the author. Nothing dry about this read. Enjoy!

It always takes a most creative mind to offer a new perspective to a way masses looks at something without questioning it; and when someone's able to break that paradigm, it's enlightening. I wish this book is promoted more, because it deserves it. The Author is quite witty, and wise.

A mix of personal essay and philosophy, this book is so well-written and intriguing, I was flat out amazed.

Having worked with law enforcement for 19 years, I really enjoyed the stories. Some of our officers saw and heard some strange things while on the road. Additionally, the old Police Department was haunted. I was in the dispatch office late one night with one of the other girls. We heard the back door open and the distinct sound of footsteps and creaking leather gear that the officers wore. We expected one of the guys was trying to scare us, but nothing happened. It was a small building and I went back to see who had come in but there was no one there. That was the only experience I had, but the dispatchers often spoke about our phantom.

I absolutely loved this book. I read it straight through in one evening. The paranormal accounts are chilling and thought provoking. The author, who has many years of law enforcement experience, includes his own stories as well. I also feel it's a great read for those entering the field of law enforcement, since most of the stories have a sort of "field training" lesson to be heeded (in my opinion)...I have a close family member just starting out as a State Trooper and he loved the stories as well. The spooky true experiences will leave you feeling creepy, but also give you a sense of wonder and hope about life.

Anyone who has stared into the night knows that it stares back. Anyone who has spend time dealing edges of humanity knows there are things beyond the edge. And like so many other things from life out in the extremes, you can't talk about it with 'normal people.' People who live deep in the safety of secular and modern life seldom have these kinds of experiences.

So when I first heard that Loren "martial arts author" Christensen was putting out a book about ghosts and UFOs and whatnot, it was a definite, "wait... what?" moment. What I've always enjoyed about Christensen's books are his ability to take very complex concepts (such as martial arts, meditation, nutrition) and filter them into a simple and understandable concept. No fluff and, more importantly, no mysticism. So this one kind of came out of blue. All that said, if you are a fan of Christensen's other books, trust me and check this one out. Christensen takes his vast law enforcement experience, gathers a team of folks with similar experience, and presents a collection of stories that will both interest you and possibly even creep the daylights out of you. This is a side of the law enforcement world you have never seen, heard of, and most likely have never even considered.Even if you, like me, are a skeptic of ghosts and aliens and everything related, give this a try. At worst you will be very entertained. And, who knows, maybe it will make you wonder if there really is something lurking in the dark...

Excellent book. Cops come across all sorts or strange stuff and these stories are excellent examples. Christensen did a great job in editing and bringing the stories to life. Highly recommended reading for anyone interested in the out of the ordinary.

This book covers a lot of ground in the paranormal world and tells the stories from reliable witnesses. It goes into ghosts and alien tales and for both it is very entertaining. As the title implies these are stories and if the book is judged on that I should give it a 5 star rating. The tales are told very well and put you on the scene as the stories unfold.I really enjoyed the book and when I got going it was hard to put it down.I would definitely recommend this book if your into reading tales of the paranormal. I'd definitely be a buyer if a 2nd book were to follow.

Well worth the price. Having experiencing something like a few of these myself,I feel I fit right in the definition of a HSP, a highly sensitive person. I am very glad there professional men and women coming forward with their experiences.Buy the book even if you are only mildly interested in unexplained phenomena. These are not the wild ramblings of marginal people, but everyday soldiers and police experiencing strange things while performing their duties.

Heard the author on late-night talk radio (Coast to Coast AM) and just had to have this book. As a private security officer, I have seen and experienced a few odd sights and sounds, and just guessed that many of our dedicated police officers had even stranger, true tales to tell... These are the real 'X' files, folks... Highly recommended read!
