#314,531 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

There are four parts to this book. The first part isn't really on figure drawing and introduces the basics of drawing and the stuff you need. As a Dummies series book, this one really assumes the reader has absolutely no knowledge on drawing. The second and third part are on drawing the head and body. The last part is about other related stuff like clothing, composition, perspective, etc. This book has a lot of text compared to other figure drawing books. The instructions are easy enough to follow. However, the illustrated examples aren't as nice as other figure drawing books.I can't believe I'll see the missing-forehead problem in a figure drawing book but it's there on some of the heads. Maybe the author is going for a stylised look? I don't know. The other problem of this book is the lack of examples of posing figures other that the ones in front, side and back views. It's might be a bit difficult to visualise the form and volume of the body, muscles and how they are affected when the body is in different position. This book might be very affordable, but there are other better ones.(More pictures are available on my blog. Just visit my Amazon profile for the link.)

How typical. The art community, as inefficient as expected. A whole chapter on drawing materials - in detail! So overkill. Who cares about prices, sheesh, who's unable to search prices on line for art material prices themselves? Two or three pages would've sufficed, or just a table with websites to look them up on yourself. The anatomy parts, like the one on the human skeleton are woefully short. Many more pages have gone into explain in small detail how you shouldn't get too used to one brand of pencils. Because the company that makes them could go out of business, and then you might need to find pencils of a different company! Who would've thought! That's going to make you the next rembrandt to know! And much text on lamps, setting up a studio. For pete's sake. That's information that isn't relevant until down the way. People buy the book because they want to learn to draw, not because they're dying for info on what kind of drawing pads there are, and which one to get (almost anything will do in the beginning anyway). The skeleton is shown from 3 angles, and the 3/4th view is only talked about. Much is just talked about through text. Some chapters are better than others though, but still lack in detail - just not as much as some of the others. For instance, the part on rendering the figure by putting together simpler shapes is far, far, shorter than that on how drawing pads can be expensive, and how it's bad to use a flat desk! Or how pencils are relatively cheap, duh. What's explained by author is that it's not recommended to use square shapes, but instead use angular shapes to represent the body parts. But no details or recommendations on which shapes to use for the what body part, not even which the author favors, and why. How is a beginner supposed to know? Ok, don't use squares, use angular shapes, but for what, what muscles? Apparently, most of that energy and page estate went into details on what rubbers, pens, lamps, ergonomic chairs, desks etc to use! A fat chapter on that alone. Whereas, just a few pages on each anatomy topic. Also, some things are explained in text, that pretty much demand complementing pictures. Like a list of technical skeleton bone names, and text descriptions on where they're located on the body, and where they join with other body parts, without picture references!Example (not saying this is accurate) "The femur holds up the body and is slightly angled, and then connects with the ulna". But where's the picture reference? Nowhere, what a joke. Drawing is a visual subject.

This book is not a bad book. The author explains that this isn't an anatomy book. You have teach yourself and it may require some research out of the book, but it has a lot of reference material.

very helpful approach;

This was a gift and they really enjoyed it

has good informaiton in it

loved it

👍 great book to study about how to draw

"What lover could possibly have matched what Malone had stored up in his imagination?"I read somewhere that Edmund White compared Dancer from the Dance to The Great Gatsby, and it really is an apt comparison in so many ways. The setting places us in the midst of New York's emerging gay scene in the 1970s, and Malone is our Gatsby. Fewer than 20 pages in we are told what kind of story this will be: it's about "doomed queens," about "why life is sad," and "what people do for love—gay or not."Like The Great Gatsby, the narrator is an unnamed person observing the beautiful and larger-than-life Malone. Malone is taken under the wing of Sutherland, a seasoned "queen" who watches over him and cares for him as a best friend. At first, Malone romanticizes the idea of falling in love, but soon becomes jaded, realizing that this is nothing more than a hopeful delusion, and resigning himself to a life of shallow hedonism.Life for Malone and Sutherland is one big party, filled with sex and drugs and dancing. But just as Fitzgerald exposed the dark heart of the glamorous 1920s, Holleran reveals the undercurrent of hollow melancholy and futile longing beneath all the surface beauty and carnal pleasures. The writing is gorgeous and evocative, the story tender and wistful. It's a beautiful work of fiction about two best friends living the only life they know.

Holleran is 'old school' gay writer. He can write an excellent gay novel without any graphic sex! The story he tells is everything!Touching sensitive novel of a man called Malone, who comes from wealth and privilege and carves out a niche for himself as a successful, hardworking lawyer. His work is everything but leaves him empty and alone. Then one summer, our lonely virgin, Malone, helps a gardener every day after work...and enjoys it. Why then is Malone tearful and mournful when the gardener leaves? He has an epiphany!! He is gay! This beautiful untouched man decides to experience gay life and gay men. He quits everything and moves to New York.Malone, (the man who doesn't know how beautiful he is), is an enigma in New York...polite,gay, beautiful, sweet, hot and nice to everyone.Holleran has a wonderful literary gift of putting out phrases that can sum up the feelings of gay men in terms that are easy to understand.eg."Remember that the vast majority of homosexuals are looking for a superman to love and find it very difficult to love anyone merely human, which we unfortunately happen to be.""The point is that we are not doomed because we are homosexual, we are doomed only if we live in despair because of it.."He describes the life of gays in New York and their favorites haunts where they were happiest..Fire Island in the summer, the Everard Baths, the discoteques before they were discovered, the endless round of parties that you could never go to until at least 2am!Holleran depends upon his words and turns of phrases to appeal to not only the homosexual but hetero females like me and makes an excellent well-developed story.I love Holleran's writing! They draw the reader into the enigmatic world of gays...their codes, their lifestlye, their mantra and even their cruelty toward each other.Sensitive,stunning,cruel,loving..the world of the gay man in 70's New York is not easy..but Malone makes it look easy.

I first saw "Dancer from the Dance" at a bookstore in a mall in Modesto California, an agricultural town in the heart of California's big valley. The cover had a blonde man wearing jeans, and a smile; he was shirtless. I remember being nervous, yet excited by the prospect that this might actually be about gay people; I was 21 years old, and there were few if any gay men I wanted to emulate, it was 1979. I was searching for my people, a way of life, a path to take: I realized that I wasn't alone. I was a bit self-conscious at my boldness as I placed the book on the counter, but the cashier was nonplussed. As I read, I entered a world that was completely foreign to me, and although I didn't aspire to be any of the characters in the novel, I wanted a life vastly different than the one I had, and I was shown that I had not only options but 'family' waiting for me. I have read 'Dancer' so many times that I have lost count. I would purchase the book and then give it to others to read. Holleran's prose is astonishingly gorgeous; perhaps the best in American writing. He has an eye for detail, an open heart and a wit to match his writing talent; NOBODY writes better: they may write differently but not better. His prose is hypnotic, and one is held prisoner by it so much so that it haunts the reader, even after one puts the book down. He recites a tale, and through his descriptive expertise, we are able to feel it, imagine it, acquiesce to it, and live it right along with him; "Dancer" is a living, breathing work; age only makes it better. It is graphic, it is unsparing, it is timeless: Dancers leave the floor, but new ones appear and this still goes on long after the 70's, long after the initial horrors of A.I.D.S., long after a fashion from that time has gone, replaced by something trendy. What isn't trendy is the human heart, and the need to love and be loved in return; desire, passion, longing, disappointment, inadequacy, and spirit still define humanity. In "Dancer", Andrew takes us to New York City in the 1970's, and we are able to feel it's pulse, and smell it's garbage and be exhilarated by the dreams and ambitions of the people who populated it then, and do so now. I have read all his books, many of his essays and adore his short stories, as well; I just checked out "Nights in Aruba" today at the library, to read again. Andrew is my favorite writer and after spending so many decades with him, rereading his work feels like a visit with a dear friend.

This is a wonderful book - a powerful, moving, and insightful take on gay male life in a big, party-loving city a couple of decades ago. Not an author I knew of, but I'm glad I discovered him. I'm neither gay nor male, but I spent some of my early and mid-twenties doing a lot of clubbing and partying... And this book very eloquently captures both the glamour and appeal, and the hollow desperation and frenzy, of those endless nights. Beautifully written.

Review

“Three comic writers have some fun with Passover. Seders may never be the same.” ―USA Today“A full-fledged comic assault on Passover… Finally, someone has created a full Haggadah that is not only fun to read, but isn’t covered in wine stains… For This We Left Egypt? runs riot with the Haggadah and takes readers from the sophomoric to the sublimely funny.” ―The Forward“Three well-known humorists have written a Haggadah for an overlooked crowd: the wiseguys, cutups, and punsters who frankly have a hard time taking the whole thing seriously.” ―Jewish Telegraph Agency“[Barry, Zweibel, and Mansbach] have joined forces to come up with the perfect humoristic antidote to this Passover ritual… [For This We Left Egypt?] is a loudly humorous, acerbic parody of the haggadah, as it dissects every aspect of the Passover holiday… All in all, a new Passover tradition can be established with For This We Left Egypt?” ―Montreal Times“A must-have for those who collect haggadot or for anyone who loves a laugh. If you’re looking to lighten up your seder, you might read a page or two from it. Just be careful, though: people might refuse to turn back to the traditional text.” ―The Reporter“[For This We Left Egypt?] brings a fair measure of levity to a holiday when leavening is banned. The book is both reverential and irreverent.” ―New York Jewish Week“A hilarious take on Passover.” ―Long Island Pulse

If you are outraged by slapstick, a lavatory joke, or shtick, then you are not going to enjoy this parody haggadah at all.If you enjoy silly, MAD magazine type (I mean like Dave Berg's My Friend God), Jewish joke material, then you will eat this up faster than a hard boiled egg in salt water. This Haggadah is in right to left format and was written by three of the funniest people G*d ever created (according to the cover blurb by G-d). This is a commentary. Don't expect to find any Hebrew for the seder or English translations. There are no prayers or readings. This is just a running commentary on the seder of The Seder. b'seder? The Haggadah opens with a "Note to Parents;" followed by a "Note to Grandparents," which informs them that they are hated at the seder if they don't lighten up on reading every single word; and this is followed by a brief word (or Note) to Episcopalians. This is then followed by jokes that may be insulting to Carps (Carpass / Karpas), Vegans (egg substitutes), Shanks (bone jokes), People with nut allergies (charoset-phobics), and Popes (shout out to Pope Innocent Viii). There is even a 'Money' joke, but they apologize for that, or at least question why it makes you uncomfortable.Did you ever wonder why there is a Kaddesh part of the seder for the Kiddush, but not a Kiddish? They explain it. Can you drink after the Afikomen? Yes, if you do it very fast. If the Corleone's had a seder and four sons... who would Fredo be? And Mike? Can a brisket be made with beer on Passover? What about prunes? When the Haggadah says the Adonai had a strong hand and outstretched arm... are they talking about a poker hand? There is a Jerry Lewis joke or two or three, but no Alan Zweibel/Milton Berle one. As for Dayenu... well you can just guess the kind of mischief that can ensue in the hands of the top comic writers. And for the Opening the Door for Elijah... well that was actually quite serious and insightful (but then followed by a joke or two on what would happen if Elijah showed up and drank wine)Nevertheless, given the silly - but spot-on observations - and uncomfortable analyses and jokes, I admit that I leaned and laughed at least once, or perhaps even twice-on-this-night, on each page; and the illustrations by Ross MacDonald - which bring comic tweeks to that Dick&Jane style of drawing - were quite chuckle-able.

At first glance, I couldn't wait to give this a second and third glance, followed by a probing analysis (with the focus on the 'ysis' part, not the other part). Anyway to clarify, this is not a Hagada it's more like primer/sidebar commentary as written by your very smart, somewhat snarky yet definitely very funny uncle--the one your parents had to invite every few years when it was "their turn"(or when your aunt called your mom and said "I don't care what excuses you come up with, next year he's all yours")...To put this in a more "Haggadic" context (and give me another chance to use non-air quotes), the 5 Rabbinic sages(none of whom had the Hebrew letter "phlegm" in their names) who pulled an all nighter discussing our Exodus from Egypt(and if God and/or Moses could sue Leon Uris for stealing the title) have nothing on the 3 comedy sages who made this instant classic a reality. Regardless if you celebrate Pesach, Passover, or "none of the above", (because you're gentile and use your Jewish-sounding name to get discounts when shopping in Jewish neighborhoods)It's truly a well crafted tome that's also a wake up call to anyone who thinks Seder reading material starts and stops with Maxwell house... speaking of Maxwell House, this is like a shot of espresso...and I mean the good stuff, not the overpriced stuff those hipster posers buy...it's so good, I can't wait to see the Broadway version! All kidding aside(well most of it), please don't confuse this with anything by Artscroll, Feldheim or for that matter Maxwell House, but despite that methinks it WILL inspire some smart Pesach/Passover-related conversation(which is what the Seder is all about)and in the process, add a fun dynamic...which is not at all surprising, considering it was done by some seriously funny guys. Makes me wish I was a fly on the wall at the "seders past" that inspired this idea.

Having attended Seders for more decades than I care to count, the telling of the story of the exodus from Egypt, year, after year, after year has become a little stiff and dry, much like the matzo around which the story is baked (or half baked, as the case may be). For This We Left Egypt ?, is a witty, thought provoking and scholarly update (okay, maybe a slight exaggeration) of the modern Haggadah, which is sure to liven up many a family Seder in the years to come. While retaining all of the rituals and traditions that have passed down through the millennium, its authors have combined their comedic talents to give both Jews and gentiles alike a new appreciation for the deeper meanings behind the Passover story. Certainly, for those of you who have considered inviting a few gentile friends to partake of the Seder, this version of the Haggadah will undoubtedly enable those friends to fully absorb the true meaning of Passover. To the more deeply traditional among you, you may wince from time to time, but once the initial shock wears off, I am confident you will go….holy s____!!!, so that is what they meant! From me, having included all the blessings over the wine and explaining how it was actually the Jews that invented the sandwich were among the highlights for me. Oh, and the belly laughs may even help to keep you up during the entire evening. This way you will not miss Elijahu…..maybe. Go out and read and re-read For This We Left Egypt? It will fill you with pride and amazement. It may even become your “go to” Haggadah at your family Seders in the years to come and bring a smile to the faces of all those sitting around your table. Whether you will find the answer to the question, did we really eave Egypt for this, read the book!. Can’t wait for the movie version.

I bought 6 books from this collection for my 3 yr old son. He likes books in general but I enjoyed option of Russian and English. Now his grandparents read to him in Russian and my older niece in English. Paper quality is good, pictures and colors are bright. Books are thin (I bought paper copy) - which is positive and negative: easy to carry anywhere you go but at the same time I feel they would wear out quickly. Also feel that price of almost $10 per book is high Overall great product!

Very nice!

Very cheap looking and inside it’s very busy. Not worth the price paid.

This book is intended for more like a 2y/o. For a 5y/o i would want better graphics and storyline.. Great quality book and manufactured materials just the substance was lacking. Very hard to determine from an online presentation without being able to hold the book in your hand.

my kid love this book. and i bought every one of them that is sold here . wish there were more books in Russian sold on amazon.

Don't teach children bad Russian from the beginning. Come on! At least have a native take a look. No Russian child would ever say "Я люблю свою маму" - that sounds like a Google translation. It's "мою маму". Always. Why even bother if you are going to start wrong early?
