As a retired Philadelphia P.D. Homicide Detective, I can't recall reading another novel that I could so closely relate to, as the the two protagonists, "Dickie and Floyd" represented in this story.Although I could identify with both characters (more so with "Dickie") the reality of both of their personalities, their banter, their concerns and dedication to their jobs, mimicked almost perfectly to my own 21 years as a police Detective (14of those in Philadelphia Homicide Division). Not only is this a great police procedural novel, the author, Mr.Danny R. Smith, has captured the true feelings, human reactions, and attempts to cope with the not only difficult, but often hard to comprehend, situations that true Homicide Detectives find themselves dealing with on a daily basis. This rings true both in the the actions I found myself dealing with on the "street" and also at times with department policies and "brass"."Dickie and Floyd's" attempts and methods of coping with their difficult job, both with the dark humor, and more than occasional gin and tonic or mug of beer, is something I know to be completely understandable, as was Dickie's personal concerns and worries about how the 'job' may have been wearing on him mentally. With all that said - this was also a good 'who-dun-it' and fun to read, and just on that basis alone, I don't think any 'mystery' lover would not enjoy this book. I hope Mr. Smith continues on with this series, and I am definitely (obviously?) a fan.Frank m.

A Good Bunch of Men will take you into the L.A. Sheriff’s Department Homicide Unit where you’ll have a ringside seat next to two amazing characters, Dickie Jones and Matt “Pretty Boy Floyd” Tyler. The story starts out with the murder of a transgender prostitute. The pair of detectives, known collectively as Dickie Floyd, lead the investigation which takes many twists and turns driving them throughout the county of Los Angeles, as well as out of state. The cast of characters they encounter along the way enliven the story and made me anxious to turn the pages. I kept promising myself, “Just one more chapter”—and then read another hour. The strength of this book is the relationship between Dickie and Floyd. The characters are well drawn out from Dickie’s penchant for stylish hats and having things “just so,” to Floyd’s free-spirited wisdom. The reader feels the bond between these two detectives so much, that at times I felt like I was reading about a married couple—which in the police world, is the true definition of a good partnership. I’m giving the book five stars—it was an excellent read.

Not only does the book provide some insight into the "other " law enforcement agency performing top tier murder investigations in the greater Los Angeles area, but the author boldly permits the reader to see much of the way real detectives think, kid each other, and behave at times. Too many of the current authors (e.g., Michael Connelly, newer Wambaugh, and James Patterson) approach character development in an almost timid manner--probably because they fear straying outside of the new politically correct environment we live in. I enjoyed the author's ability, and courage to portray somewhat flawed characters who were still the good guys, tirelessly endeavoring to bring some semblance of justice to the victim(s) and their survivors. Pretty close to reality in most cases. So, iIf you want to experience good entertaining writing full of witty exchanges and other humor, as well as getting a glimpse into the lives of detectives not typically found in other novels of this genre, give this book a read!

The title says "a good bunch of men" and a detective novel. I read about 40% of the book and probably 38% of the book was the two detectives interacting with each other and others and only about 2% detective work. Insufficient story lines up to this point to maintain interest.

I received an advance copy to review from the author, Danny Smith.A Good Bunch of Men belongs on the bookshelf of every Joseph Wambaugh and Michael Connelly fan. Wambaugh and Connelly write about LAPD. Smith has written the quintessential LA County Sheriff's Department novel. The characters are well developed, the story is paced just right, and the dialog is perfect. I read this book in one sitting because I could not put it down. "A Good Bunch of Men" reads like a Homicide detective version of the movie, "End of Watch." I was drawn in and felt what life is like for a Homicide detective. Buy this book today!

It was a bonus for me that I loved the story. As a cop myself working these same areas, I was taken back to my patrol days. Author Danny Smith gets it right every time down to the smallest details. If you want to read a compelling story and get the feeling you are in a crime adventure behind the yellow tape, this book is for you. Refreshing to read great Los Angeles crime stories from the perspective of the L.A. Sheriff's Department. Bravo!

This was a great read and introduction to the series. The character development was the key that grabbed me initially. The personalities of the detectives were detailed to tge point you felt like you knew them, or at least wanted too. As a former member of the same Department, I had to laugh at the true to form dark humor and personal interactions that exist throughout the book. The true test for me was that I could visualize the detectives throughout the situations that were brilliantly described. The storyline/investigation kept me interested and eager to turn the page and I am looking forward to tge next installment.

**Advanced copy** - thank you to the author Danny R. Smith for the advanced copy of A Good Bunch of Men, spectacular read. His writing style is descriptive and playful, peppered with dark humor. He draws the reader in and keeps them wanting more from page to page, the read never gets stale. This reader is looking forward to the book in the series.
