Until I bought this short book, I had only two other pieces of drama or poetry in my collection - an old Arden's Shakespeare edition of Henry V and a collection of Poe's works - I'm just not a big fan of reading poetry or drama, though I do enjoy seeing plays acted. In any case, I added this due to an increasing interest in the Middle Ages, esp. the Plantagenet dynasty. I'm familiar w/ the story of Becket from watching the old film, "Becket," and from recent reading on Henry II.I think this is one of those books - even at less than 90 pages - where a helping handing is required, so I relied on the great material at novelguide dot com to help me with understanding some of the imagery, symbolism, cultural references, etc., and it was a great aid. I also had notes written in my used copy from its original owner, a coed - Class of 1964 - at the College of New Rochelle. Rather than detracting from the enjoyment of reading it, the charming marginalia added to it.There's some lovely turns of phrase here - right from the first page: "Since golden October declined into sombre November..." - and while I'm sure I should know my Bible better, and missed some of the references, I could still catch the Chorus's cadence and words that were reminiscent of Ecclesiastes.And the famous "The last temptation is the greatest treason:To do the right deed for the wrong reason."My favorite part was Becket's homily; and while the last speeches by the knights are sometimes seen as a bit of comic relief and a play on British manners, I found their justifications ("he had it coming to him," basically) and bureaucratic detachment (they basically say: "you're welcome, England") from their murder to be chilling - and that points to some very strong writing on Eliot's part to give me that feeling.If there's a reason why I'm giving only 4 stars instead of 5, it's that the play is still narrow in focus - without Henry II bellowing "Will no one rid me of this meddlesome priest," something seems lackingBut for drama, introspection on temptation and rewards here on earth, and in Heaven, and lovely poetry - it's highly recommended

I was expecting this play to be a more detailed reimagining of the murder of Thomas a Becket in Canterbury Cathedral, something more like the Richard Burton movie "Becket." Not so. This play is far shorter and focuses more on Eliot's poetic/spiritual analysis of Becket's martyrdom than it presents historical fiction. King Henry II, who according to tradition indirectly ordered Becket's murder, is not featured at all, and St. Thomas himself even seems to appear less than some of the other characters.This isn't to say that "Murder in the Cathedral" is not worth reading. T.S. Eliot here really shows his poetic verve and has some lines that make you ponder their meaning. It's a beautiful verse play, similar to Shakespeare but much shorter (and without humor). And different from other adaptations of the Becket story, the Four Knights who kill the archbishop are given an opportunity to defend themselves. Their actions (and Becket's, too) are left for the reader to judge.A lot of lines are given to the Chorus of women who operate somewhere between traditional Catholicism and folk beliefs--they seemed to me to be sort of "wise women," that is, both magical and spiritual in their prophecies and statements. Usually a Chorus is used to fill-in details for the play-readers and watchers: Eliot uses them here not only for that function, but also to dominate the storytelling. I appreciated what the Chorus had to offer, but I would have rather read more of the thoughts of the principal characters than of these "side" characters.The scene where Becket is challenged with the Four Temptations (parallel to the temptations of Christ) is very powerful and moving: here we see Eliot at his best.I would recommend this play for anyone who is familiar enough with the Henry II / Becket tradition (if you don't know the history, or don't do a quick brush-up on Wikipedia before reading it, you'll be totally lost). It's a very powerful, moving play, and I hope to see it performed on stage sometime.

Eliot's Nobel Prize for literature was scarcely adequate recognition. No hyperbole, here: I mean it.

T S Eliot was a genius too obscure for me on most of my days in most of his work. This short play has all the profundity without all of the inaccessibility. If you ever wanted to get inside a true saint's head, this is the one to read. And it will only take an evening. It tastes like C.S. Lewis, but prepared by a greater writer. If you ever want to give a religious talk or a sermon, read this first and see how a master does it.

Eliot clearly had the rise of fascism on his mind when he wrote the play, Becket is placed in the position of helping create a theocracy by King Henry and his refusal is the cause of his martyrdom. However the meat of the play is a psychological drama about his challenge by such circumstances.As an aside, the Kindle version has clearly been scanned from the original paper version, there are several places where the words are obviously misspelled owing to such scanning processes.

The book is very good, but this is a review of the kindle version not of the work. There are quite a few very obvious mistakes in this. It doesn’t seem proofread at all. There was a 1 where an I should be. There are numerous places where the characters “rn” were “m”. And various other typos. You really couldn’t be bothered to check? I mean I could read it, but it makes me wonder how many other words were wrong and I just didn’t know it.

Received free, but not worth the time to read it.Revised: Okay, I spent some time to read a few more pages and still think it's a waste of time. Someone's idea of piecing together "evidence" of what they want to be true. Rather like a fake news site.

Do not buy version from publisher: CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform. the title is still the same, but content is the watered down version of the original. in this free country US of America with democracy and freedom of speech pride, a religious book has been modified to not "offend" a group of people with hard TRUTH. we no longer have freedom.

This book was not written by Ellen G. White. If you have read any of her books you will see a marked difference in writing style. It is obvious that the publisher has set out to deceive others on the origin of this book. It contains the exact number of chapters as the original, but on closer review you will see the chapter titles are all different. After reading the first two chapters of this book, I found numerous errors that are in direct conflict to the Bible and Ellen G. White's real book. If you want the real deal, purchase this book published by Pacific Press Publishing Association.

Powerful read. We went to Maui on our Anniversary and the weather wasn't the best, so I read to my wife the first twenty (20) chapters! It provoked a lot of conversation and we both felt blessed by the experience. It was one of the most profitable and growing vacations we have had.

This book is about a spiritual controversy between good and evil from the time Lucifer because very proud down to the time went there will be no more sin and evil in the universe. The history had been taken place but on a spiritual level. I would recommend everyone to read this book, you will be spiritually blessed!

I don't think this book is anywhere near as entertaining as the author, an economics teacher at UC Irvine, thinks. It's meant to be a popular and light-hearted look at a variety of pricing puzzles: those situations where common sense suggests the price either needs to rise or fall for business to pick up. McKenzie tries his hand at explaining a slew of them, such as the pricing of used cars or of campus housing.It's basically like "Freakonomics," except nowhere near as well-written or mind-blowing. In the preface, the author acknowledges that his book "might appear to emerge only because of the success of other economists who have sought to apply economic reasoning broadly, as Steven Levitt, an economist, with wordsmithing help of journalist Stephen Dubner, has done in the wildly successful book, Freakonomics." (p. XI) He then goes on to insist that no, he was going to write this book anyhow. In fact, he had the idea first, he says, claiming that his 1975 book, "The New World of Economics" accomplished everything that Freakonomics later did - except the sales, I would add.Anyhow, I would suggest you read "Freakonomics" instead, as that book is much more clearly written and more startling. This book can't even boast an intriguing solution to the titular problem. As if that weren't unforgivable enough, once you finish his section on the pricing of theater popcorn, you still remain to be convinced that he in fact has uttered the last word on the matter.If you're using this as a supplementary reader to an econ course, it'd better be a micro course, since many of the concepts McKenzie discusses require conversance with basic microeconomics: elasticity, consumer surplus, marginality, etc. Without a command of those, you're going to be fairly lost most of the time. Here's a sample:"Again what the theater is doing is walking its patrons down their proverbial demand curves. They aren't so much lowering the marginal price of the additional ounces as they are hiking the price on those first few ounces. and this kind of pricing structure allows theaters to effectively charge all popcorn buyers some "admissions price" for concessions, which can be used to cover their many overhead costs in providing concessions and cleanup." (p. 95)

Bought this book for my daughter. It has a lot of info but it can get confusing.

Richard McKenzie has written yet another book that belies the notion that economics is a dismal science. It's not in his hands. This book helps readers make keener sense of what they know quite well but probably had no time to analyze or apply widely. The author does not condescend to readers but takes farther what they know implicitly about how markets work, why commerce is how it is, why some oddeties are in fact, quite normal once looked at more closely than we have time for. If only McKenzie taught my economics course in college I would have been better prepared for the ups and downs of markets, large and small.

If you have seen or heard McKenzie being interviewed about his book on TV or radio, you might think that his book is about nothing more than the price of popcorn. He does provide an interesting explanation for the high price of popcorn that is very different than what almost everyone believes. But the book uses simple economic reasoning and examines lots of facts to explain the pricing of a host of different products and services. And he does so in an engaging way, with many chapters written as economic mysteries in which McKenzie begins by presenting the common explanation for a pricing policy (for example, ending prices with a 9), pointing out the problems with this explanation and then challenging readers to see things differently by leading them to a more compelling explanation for the way prices are what they are. I'm not sure this makes McKenzie the Agatha Christie of economics, but it does help make this an enjoyable as well as informative book about prices--something we all have an interest in.

After reading the fun, light, breezy Freakonomics and Super Freakonomics, I gave this book a try. The author acknowledges Dubner and Levitt's work on those two books as inspiration to write his own. However, Dubner and Levitt got it right. One is an economist and professor, the other is a writer. Unfortunately McKenzie (a professor) tries to write this book alone, without the help of a professional writer. It comes off more like a textbook - lots of theory and principles - and less anecdotal prose. This could be half the number of pages and be much more entertaining. By the way, I do have a degree in economics and found it to be boring most of the time, skimming over several paragraphs just to cut to the chase.

The author spends like 5 chapters to spill out one of his points. Yes the book is somewhat relevant to "why popcorn costs so much at the movie theatre." But really, do you really want to spend 12 hours reading just to find out? No.

I have many "coffee table books" with beautiful photos of Africa, but this one is different. Offering a perspective you do not see even from an airline seat. these are aerial photos with enough elevation to show the patterns of the topography and subject matter...but also close to earth so you SEE the people, the wildlife, the plants that make up the images. A great book to just pore over the photos and dream of faraway places.

The photos are incredible. The book is extra large sized.

Beautiful pictures.

This book is breath taking. The photography is so beautiful you think it can't really be our planet. It portrays Africa from a different perspective showing the vastnest and complexities of the region. The descriptions of the photographs are well written. I enjoyed the poetry and prose added in the appropriate places in the book.

This book was just a feature on The Sunday Morning Show. The views of Africa that this man has captured from a helicoper are very moving. I not only want to own this book I wish I could go to Washington DC and see the exhibit of the original photographs. An exhibition of Robert Haas's photographs can be viewed in National Geographic's M Street Building, October 25, 2005, to January 25, 2006. But if that is not possible buy the book.

I was disappointed with the book. Although the book is well done, good quality and big pictures, the photos were just "nice".I expected more.There were a few beautiful images, but none "jaw dropping", and in general, I think they had no poetry, no soul.To me it seemed like an average person photographing from a helicopter (= scared animals), not a true artist capturing the magic of Africa.I was even bored half way through. I recommend checking it out at your local bookstore before ordering it through Amazon, to make sure you're getting what you expect.Nick Brandt's book, despite very different in style, causes much more emotion.

I am reading this as I audit a course in Environmental Studies at the University of Wisconsin. Overall I like the book whose first half is devoted to philosophy of the environment and the second half is case studies using the fist part as an analytical foundation. I believe it is worth reading.

I absolutely loved this textbook. It's really easy to read and kept me interested. I started reading it and finished it before my class even started. It covers so many different areas too. Loved that it talked about overfishing and Tuna, although it could have gone more into depth with it. I would highly recommend it!

Finally, an easy to read textbook! Funny and interesting all in one! I like this book a lot and I hope I have an excuse to keep reading it in the future.

As a former fundamentalist Christian and a present GR (Gospel revolutionist- see Gospelrevolution.com) I find many things interesting about this book and would even sort of recommend it. The criticisms of Christianity, Islam and other major religions are mostly valid. As a former Christian fundamentalist I find much to criticize in that faith. In particular the teaching on hell, the "end times" and the the role we play in our "salvation". I am a "redemptionist". A redemptionist is one that believes that Christ's death on the Cross was the fulfillment of Old Testament scripture and that through this work on the Cross ALL of humanity is born again. In short we all died with Christ on the Cross and we all rose with him at his resurrection past, present and future generations. When the Old Testament and New Testament are read in this context then the words begin to make sense. Hell is not taught in the Old Testament- the word is "sheol" the grave. The New Testament is the same: mostly the word is the grave or "gehanna" which was a garbage dump outside Jerusalem. It was Christ's faith not our faith, Christ's work not our work and Christ's belief not our belief that brought redemption to the world. When these thoughts are dwelt on then "salvation" comes to the soul. Every human that has ever lived will end up in the presence of God. You are holy righteous and perfect in his eyes NOT because of what have or have not done but because of Christ and Christ alone. This is the Gospel. This is Good News. The "end times" happened 2,000 years ago. The judgment of the world happened 2,000 years ago- it is not a coming event but a past event. With the discovery of the Dead see scrolls the Old Testament has become even more reliable from the perspective of scribal error whereas the New Testament is good reporting from a journalistic perspective but is so liable to transcription error as to make it suspect on many levels with the result that unless interpretations do not contradict the Old Testament prophecies they can be set aside. There is a freedom in the Gospel that the authors of this book have not perceived. It is inclusive in every way. Not a single person has been left out. All are redeemed. Salvation comes to those who seek and is continuous lifelong journey. To the extent that the authors encourage pursuit of the journey I recommend this read.

This book shakes one's belief in humankind's development of religion to the core! However, the analysis of the difference between Gnostics and Literalists makes one return to the first beginnings of Creation to question and,more importantly, to explore one's own belief in a Supreme Being. Stripping bare the myriad overlays of interpretation of doctrine and dogma results in an essential quest for truth, goodness and beauty.

I have read lots of books on the subject but wide range of topics covered with this book as the three major religions of the world. The history of Islam was most enlightening. Rivetined the stories of Mohammed and the contradiction of proficiency, the same for all the religions. The church and there development over the years which lead to the dark ages in Europe. Literalism and fundamentalist the major causes of mass murder in the name of God?... why cause we know not ourselves..

Arrived on time and in excellent shape. A thought provoking perspective on religion. Am enjoying it immensely. Those in my Bible study group, not so much, perhaps. The writing is very thought provoking and makes one consider why the world isn't flat and why one shouldn't believe all you read.

I read "The Laughing Jesus" after reading " The Templars,Two Kings and A Pope". It's almost as if one were to follow the other;and now I am reading "Jesus and the Lost Gospels" which really should have come before " Laughing Jesus". No matter, as long as I read them, thats what counts. I loved the books and will continue to read more from the same authors.If the teachings of all of the above are true, as I beleive, especially after reading so much material on the same subjects before I read the above, then the message in all is potentially world changing. One other thought.If Jesus is a "mythological figure", acording to the Freke/Gandy books, what will Royalty base their right to be Royal on. I am no expert on royalty, however, if tracing one's lineage back to Jesus is a qualification for Royalty and Jesus is a myth then there is not much for the titled to stand on. Just a thought.

Everyone who wants a condensed history of religion, especially the "nightmare of religion," will find this book informative. It states, "This book is a damning indictment of Literalist religion and a passionate affirmation of Gnostic spirituality." And then it goes on to show the differences between the two in the beginning. It separates the "baby" and the "bathwater." The bathwater being the first part of the book, the baby being the second part which I found to be very inspiring!I would recommend this book to anyone wanting to examine the age-old questions; Who are we? Why are we here?

Love this book! As I also loved Jesus and the Lost Goddess. Definitely NOT for everyone who is not ready to accept the Truth.

I have read everything by Freke and Gandy written since the The Jesus Mysteries: Was the "Original Jesus" a Pagan God?. It has all been interesting and valuable in my research on the nature of God. I don't agree with all of their points but their writing certainly makes you think. The idea that Jesus was not a historical man, but instead was a religious myth is not supported by today's biblical scholars but certainly worthy of consideration. Only about 2% of the PHDs who study Jesus are in that camp. Like much from the first few centuries CE the ability to be certain and definitive is lacking. My research for "Seeking God at the Idol Meat BBQ" concluded that whatever you believe about God, Jesus, Buddha, or Allah must be taken on faith not facts.

This is a great book. I don't think there has been any self-help book that has helped me as much as this one. The explanations are very clear and the sequence of self-help activities (cognitive behavior therapy) is very easy to understand. The program begins by explaining the different ways we distort our thinking. For example, "mind-reading" is one of our distorted thinking patterns which is when we presume to know what others think of us, our clothes, our actions, etc. aThe book describes 10 cognitive distortions that make us unhappy. Then, there are exercises to identify negative thoughts, understand the distortion at play, and reframing the thought in a positive way. This is a very "in-a-nutshell" sort of explanation. I have been working in the book for three weeks. Already I feel a tremendous change in my outlook. There are exercises to do. If you do them, you will get better. If you just read the material, probably not. Think about this: you can read a stack of books about tennis but until you get on the court you'll never be able to play. Get this book and do the exercises. You'll be pleased.

I'm not sure why I never discovered this book till now but glad I've found it. It beats every other therapy book I have read. It's comprehensive addresses may of the issues people face. It's well written but I can only get through small chunks at a time. I have a notebook and bookmark to keep track of where I amI can see it being intimidating for some people. 1) It's quite thick 2) one has to be prepared to do a lot of reading as well as exercises. While CBT may not work for everything, I believe everyone will find something useful in this book. Also keep in mind you don't need to do the whole book, just the relevant sections.SUGGESTIONS- I recommend buying the 1999 edition (the one with Dr. Burns on the cover). The edition with the blue cover is flimsy and the paper is so thin and tears easily.- Buy the handbook over the classic 'Feeling Good: The New Mood Therapy'. The handbook is more comprehensive and a better format and has exercises. Or get both if you want the classic to read while traveling etc. It does have some content that the Handbook does not have. The Handbook is quite bulky but the classic is small though a bit hard to read (it's designed and formatted like an old paperbacks from the 70s - even though it's new)- If you find the books intimidating or prefer a different format, I highly recommend the podcast. He covers a lot of the same material and it might be easier to understand the concepts.- My only criticism is the instructions for the exercises should be clearer and they should provide digital copies as the ones in the book are small and hard to photo and print. I ended up making my own versions.

Reading through some of the one star reviews I was surprised. Several of them seem to feel that Dr Burns is "victim blaming" when he points out that ultimately YOU are responsible for how you react to someone else. But it is a hard truth that too many people do not understand. Yes. When someone says something objectively cruel, it's no fun. But rather than being sad or angry, Burns teaches that we should ask ourselves "Is that a true statement?" Since most objectively cruel statements are not, we should be indifferent to it as we should be to all things not based on facts.On the other hand, if we have been depressed and perhaps not noticed our poor hygiene for a week and a stranger at a store says "You smell bad." We should acknowledge the objective truth of it. Whether the person meant to make us feel bad or were trying to help us is irrelevant to the truth of their statement. If it's true, a nice hot bath might make us feel a little better. No need to get angry or sad at their observation.In short, good mental health requires active participation by the patient. Some people will be helped by meds, others won't for various reasons, one of which is the person expecting the meds to be magical pills that fix everything with zero effort from the patient. A LOT of GP's prescribe anti-depressants without any therapy because the patients refuse to attend. Those folks fall into the aforementioned category. Burns says that patients HAVE to participate for long-term mental health.The book explains that being mindful that depression can cause your mind to literally lie to you and goes through ways to fight back. It has ways to help stop the "looping" that happens when the mind decides to compulsively make you think about something over and over. It has a workbook component that I see a LOT of people resenting. Seriously? The workbook was very helpful to me. The author even caught me trying to NOT take the it because I resented it at first. Instead of being resentful, I did the work and was the better for it.With my most recent purchase I have now bought 6 copies of this book for various friends fighting serious depression. The ones that actually did the workbook part of this book have thanked me. The others? They tossed it on their bookshelf and still show all the signs of being depressed. This is not a cure-all. It is not a talisman wherein the mere ownership induces good mental health. You have to read it, do the work book parts and then go out and do the work itself every day. Good luck.

Time honored and it really does help with depression - you have to DO the work. I studied this type of thing when getting my masters in counseling years ago - I hit a time in my life where nothing was working for my depression....my sister and I did the book together and we worked with the book for a year. Sometimes, you have to re learn things you thought you knew. The best parts are really about changing your perceptions about life and what it all about - feeling good is a bit misleading- more like - accepting life as it is instead of the fantasy we thought it might be. And being thankful for all of it anyway.

If you have ANY difficulty keeping your emotions in order, this is a great book. It addresses anger, anxiety, depression, self-esteem, fear, phobias, intimacy. It uses cognitive behavior therapy which means that one can change their feelings by changing how one thinks. Burns gives many tools to help one change but one has to be ready to change and do all of the exercises in the book. It can change your life!
