I credit this book for an incredibly enjoyable 8 days in Havana. It's a lot different then other travel books like the ones from Lonely Planet, Moon, and Fodors that I also read.Imagine that you are in a club and you see a pretty girl at a bar. You could just sit down at a table for a drink and admire her from afar. Most people would do that and that would be the end of it.But imagine you have the confidence to walk up to the girl and start a conversation. You find out she is a university student. Her hobbies are baking, painting and dancing. You notice she has an interesting tattoo on her wrist and compliment her on it. She tells you the story about when she got that tattoo and what it means to her. She asks you if you know how to Salsa. You say "no". She says, "It's easy, I'll teach you!" Soon, you are on the dance floor with her warm body pressed up against yours and her perfumed hair brushing against your face.Which would you rather experience? If you follow the advice of other tour books, your experience in Havana will be like most tourists: enjoyable, but never really getting to know the "real" Havana. The author, Mario Rizzi, gives you the knowledge and confidence to get to know and maybe fall in love with the real Havana. Stay in a "casa particular" and live with hosts that treats you like family. Get around Havana while getting to know Cubans of all ages and walks of life taking "colectivos" that cost 40 cents a ride. Share several big plates of the best ice cream with your new Cuban friends that you met while waiting on line at the famous Coppelia ice cream parlour (20 cents for 5 scoops!).In addition to helping you experience the real Havana, the book is also great at teaching you how to avoid hustlers who target tourists. I can say proudly that I didn't fall for a single scam during my entire visit.

This is the 2017 edition - it even mentions Castro's recent death! This book is all the info I was hunting for online but only finding bits of here, bits of there.... this book has everything you would want to know in one place and then some! You've heard Cuba has lines? It does. This book tells you how to wait in them - yes, there is a Cuban way to do it!Curious about where the swap meets are? This book explains them and where to find them. Other shopping? He explains the differences between the stores you'll find in Cuba and where to go to experience and see each type.Learn how to order street food, what paladares are good, and so much more. Can you tell I really love this book? Excellent guide and I highly recommend it.

The author stated that with a policeman stationed at every corner in Old Havana, it was absolutely safe to venture out on foot st any time.Well my wife's purse got snatched, as we left a wonderful restaurant on a Saturday evening. It contained only a few CUCs, her passport, visa, and drivers license. So, here's another tip. Make copies of your visa and passport to carry around with you, and leave your originals in your hotel. It took four hours and $130 to get a temporary replacement passport at the US Embassy, and really created a major headache trying to leave Cuba without an exit visa.Other than that incident, we had a wonderful trip, and the book provided a lot of good tips to follow. Especially regarding the cigar hustlers. They're everywhere.

Best guide I have seen.Contains many good resources. The video resources are great as well. It gave us a place to book transfers and tours that do not break the bank. We are taking it with us when we travel to Cuba in February. Has lots of good suggestions.

I bought two books for my trip to Cuba, the Lonely Planet guide and this one. You really need both, besides covering the entire country in depth, the Lonely Planet guide is much more comprehensive about travel transitions, lodging, restaurants, sightseeing, etc. But Real Havana's strength is that it teaches you the quirks and nuances of Cuban life, and I learned so much about things like how Cubans line up, how the monetary system works, how to catch a taxi particular, etc., which gave me a whole other level of insight into the culture. I highly recommend reading this book before you go, it really helped me understand what was going on, and feel more at home in Havana.

Just returned from Havana (and Trinidad) and must say that this book is spot on with what it says about local customs. For example, the part about the Cuban "queuing" system was perfect and helped me to get access to things that I otherwise wouldn't have since I knew how to establish and save a spot in line. It's not a "tour" guide like a Lonely Planet type of book, but it's essential to have to learn the quirks of the culture.

This book was highly readable and I hope it's going to save me some money when I get to Cuba. It explains in detail how the local economy works and how it can work to your benefit. I liked it so much in paper I bought the Kindle version to bring with

Good guide for the traveler to Cuba. Read this book to prepare for your trip to a very different place. Thoroughly researched and topical for 2018 Havana. Well written and an easy read. Full of relevant tips, do’s and don’ts for the traveler going to Havana. Glad I got the book before my trip!
